The topic of Windows Firewall came up again today when a site had turned it on
When I asked "Shouldnt there be a way to write rules in the windows firewall so that we could just keep it on?"
He replied: "look into that, and see what you can find. It would have been better for the vendor to add that to their image they give us to boot the POS but if you can find a way to do it we can try it that way."

That's a win in my book, now setup wireshark and see what the hell is being used!

My weekend plans basically. or maybe monday morning.. lets see what happens.

All licensing aside, @WrCombs what is the memory situation now?

      lol okay.
It seems that I have 50+ instances of javaw.exe running at once,
I found that in the startup folder, there is an oracle Java updater in there.
I disabled it and cut the RAM usage in literal Half from what it was using at the start prior to the reboot .
Since I dont see anywhere that we would use Java Im going to leave it disabled

That is the UEFI shell which typically means that the device is configured to boot in UEFI mode and cannot find/load the boot file/partition.

So it's the BIOS that gives me this. Does it mean it doesn't find the disk or just doesn't find the partition or it could be both?

I've seen this a few times when There is no boot-able drive/partition..
I'd say check that the drive is still connected to start,

      Hi folks,

Does a Dell server/array need to use SSDs from Dell?

Say we had a T640 server, or MD1200 DAS, or MD3820F SAN, could the drives be populated with say Samsund 860 SATA?

      Best,
      Jim

In my experience as long as the connections are correct, I don't see why you cant use a samsung SSD with Dell Server..

I may be completely wrong but I'm confident you don't need to use Dell SSD's ...

I'm using fedora and I'm looking for task manager.

Use Ctrl+Alt+Del for Task Manager in Linux to Kill Tasks Easily. In Windows you can easily kill any task by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and bringing up the task manager. Linux running the GNOME desktop environment (i.e. Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc.) has a similar tool that can be enabled to run exactly the same way

I've used regular (non-Dell) drives in servers for a while, zero issues. The iDRAC will still show predicted failures, etc in my experience. However, I have had no success putting non-Dell drives into storage devices (we have an MD3xxx, it will not recognize regular drives).

Want to mention the specific drives that are working for you?

Looking back at some of the invoices, some are regular drives with the same model number as the Dell ones, others are generic "dell compatible" drives bought on Amazon or NewEgg (simply because they include the hot swap tray for the price of a plain drive). All way cheaper than Dell.

so the secret is to find dell compatible drives?

Best sales people are IT folks or people that are knowledgeable with the product.

I dont know why companies hire sales instead, and to give you an example in one of my previous company the sales person would ask me IT question I provide answers, she post solutions then recommends product at the end as an IT expert.

Every experience I've ever had with sales were they bluntly lied about everything to make it seem better than it was.
So why would you trust anyone in sales ever?

    • Epson Thermal Receipt printer issues

Do we have any epson printer heads here ?

I'm running into an issue were receipt printers are printing characters such as @v or ??????????? on top of receipts.
I have Epson TMT 88 Thermal Printers with Serial connections on com ports on the POS terminals.

I've replaced adapters, checked connections, replaced patch cables, checked hardware settings for those ports for baud rate, handshaking etc.
all of the above is correct, Hardware guys had me test printing .txt files to the printer as just the hardware and they don't print that way.

I've asked everyone else in the point of sale world and still have yet to get an answer that will resolve the issue.

It doesn't do this with NCR terminals, but with POSBANK terminals it seems this is an on going issue.
I've been searching the web and trying different fixes. even the hardware vendor told me things to try and it's still not working.
I'm pulling what little hair i have left out trying to fix this.
      any advice would be appreciated..

      Generic text driver?

I dont think we install the printers on the hardware.

only set it in our software and it prints the receipts .
