I think everyone who has made a comment here is correct based on our definition. Though my article covered an example of a user implementing a technology outside IT's jurisdiction, an implementation could have just as well been someone extremely technical brought in to do IT work like Scott mentions. That scenario never crossed my mind when I wrote the article, so thanks for that, @scottalanmiller. I guess maybe that sort of thing is not as common in smaller departments like where I've worked.

True lesson in this story is do not work on a production system with changes that could take it out of service when time is critical. Better to say, "Next time you have a long meeting at the end of a Friday, let me take a look at your computer."

What is this traffic thing you speak of?

I thought about saying the same thing. But the fact I do not drive to work... well I didn't want to rub it in too much 😛

I think it refers to these.

@NetworkNerd said in Outlook Slow to Open, Interesting tracert to Hosted E-mail Provider:

Check out the latency on that 4th hop. At that point traffic goes across Level 3's network (supposedly still a server in Dallas). We brought this up with our provider (LightSpar), and they are telling us that despite the latency showing to be high on the tracert, it is not delaying the exchange of information between us and our hosted Exchange server.

It can't be, you prove that it is not having any affect from your ping and traceroute. Your latency is under 50ms, so its own response time is irrelevant.

For those who blog, what criteria do you use to determine if your blog should be one giant post versus smaller, bite-sized posts? I have an idea in mind for my next blog post, but putting it out there as one post would make it pretty massive. I was just curious about guidelines others use to determine appropriate length so as not to overwhelm the readers with too much content in one post.

      Any feedback is much appreciated.

Most readers have a one or two minute attention span UNLESS they are specifically googling the issue.

      TL;DR.

Confirmed, Office 365 has specific ITAR plans.

I assume in the government plans?

Yes, the ITAR offerings are government only from what I have seen.

I assume that means the cost skyrockets but don't know. My guess is there are minimum user accounts you have to meet as well.

ITAR will always raise the cost because you are demanding that things done to lower costs can't be done; and you force them to do special stuff just for you. No matter what, it makes the cost of service delivery much higher.

Is that ASP.NET code or classic ASP? Our pages are classic ASP.

@scottalanmiller said in How Are You Measured?:

There is only one useful way to measure IT.... Its impact to the way that the CEO is measured. Anything else like SLA, uptime, tickets, etc is misleading, actively undermines the organization and leads to gamification.

RIOC, Average Revenue per customer/whatever the metric of your industry is, IT should be serving improving that metric.

@whizzard said in Adventures in Graceful VM Shutdown:

How does the licensing work with multiple UPS?

The answer is...it depends. If you want OpMonis to monitor multiple UPS devices and shutdown things gracefully, it can do that using a single license but will only allow one shutdown list and would begin shutting down things as soon as your predefined threshold is hit for any one of the monitored UPS devices.

The other option is to get a second license of OpMonis to monitor the second UPS and have a dedicated shutdown list just for that UPS and its connected equipment.

Just one of many reasons I'm glad we use Mint/CentOS wherever possible. The security risks aren't any less, but they are different. Different in a way that's easier for me to prevent against bad actors.

At least you understand that running other OSes than Windows is not the panacea that a lot of people think it is.

For sure. Nothing like comparing ls to what is in a repository to find it's been replaced by a rootkit. Yep, I've seen this happen before.

I have no clue where the money goes. I know that the BS supplies that we used to get all the time, pens, notepads, desk toys, etc - those are more or less gone - not allowed apparently anymore.
Of course spending who knows how much on lunches/dinners, etc still happens - the claim is that that is the only way a doctor will stop long enough to talk to a drug rep about a new drug. who knows if that's true or not.

And talking about universities - man those places are perhaps the most corrupt of all!
