Really I don't see any difference in this than the iphone club from Apple these days - other than you all hate them. I don't have an opinion as I haven't been burnt by one personally.
The price $53/m for 24 months, $1272 and you own it at the end (I think) not bad. And the lock-in for them hoping you'll trade it in for the next model at 12 or 18 months, get a new monthly payment and a new device.
Really if you're the type to get a new computer frequently, or a new phone frequently, these plans mostly make sense. Do you pay the most, probably, but there's a lot less hassle selling the device off at the end.
For the most part, I think this is true. To me, leasing an iPhone makes more sense than leasing a car. Sure a car depreciates in value, but once its paid off its yours and its still usable. If you pay off a phone, then you may get another year or 2 out of it. But after a while, it will either break or the network will upgrade their network so far that they will quit supporting your phone.
If I rely on my phone for work or whatnot, then it would probably make more sense to lease it. This way you can ensure that you will have a reliable phone for the most part. When its not working, trade it in and get one that does work. Its their phone. They are just renting it out to you.
