Hardware is not worth the fucking time to get back.

If the company thinks wasting man hours on that is a good idea the company is insane

While I largely agree, our R&D laptops are ~2-3K a pop. (fully max spec' MPB or XPS with onsite repair agreements).

I did hear we have started on the Mac's using DEP, so the device will auto-enroll in MDM even if the device is wiped.
      https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204142

Makes no sense developing on a laptop IMHO - unless you're talking about another kind of R&D in another field.

On our team we remote into development servers and all development and testing is run there. Which means the computer you're actually sitting in front of just needs to be able to run a browser, rdp, ssh etc. So any machine suitable for general office work would get the job done. So no 2-3K laptops needed for development, even if that is not the primary reason. I kind of assumed everyone worked that way but haven't actually given it much thought until now.

I haven't really seen anyone do this other than CAD work. Everywhere I've been it's local development, possibly using Eclipse Che or Coder or something for a remote IDE but still local.

VSCode and JetBrains tools allow you to include your development environment in a container. So when you open the project it will open inside of a container with all of the dependencies included. That's the best workflow ive seen so far.

I believe you and find it very interesting. Wov. If that's how most people work, I'm just blown away. I assumed everyone was remote and had full on development and test environments at their disposal.

They usually do have full dev/test environments but it's all containerized. So it's trivial to run that locally. Then when you are satisfied with local results push to your branch and have it auto build/deploy against the actual dev/test environments with something like Flux/Argo. This is still remote, GitOps is all about remote workflows.

I want to rename a Hyper-V host to comply with a new server naming scheme. The Hyper-V host runs 2 production servers that are replicating to another host along with being a host that other Hyper-V hosts replicate to. I’ve been unable to find anything that says this not a good idea or explaining what this can break. If this can break things, or is a hassle, I’ll leave the name alone. I don’t know how the Hyper-V replication handles a host name change. Has anyone renamed a Hyper-V host?

How is Replica set up? HTTPS or are both members of the guest's domain?

Off the top the rename would break things either way. With the need to re-establish replication the existing replicated data should be okay to use as a seed.

Replica is setup on HTTP. I'm leaning towards not renaming the host. Seems like it will not be worth the effort.

Not HTTPS so not using certificates? It's not much of a chore if straight HTTP.

That being said, if it is HTTPS then the certificates need to be generated, seated, and applied again to get them happy with each other.

I solved this by rekeying the *.domainname.com wildcard SSL to *.local.domainname.com.

Now that I've experienced Fedora WS & Server updates, why do/does Windows updates suck so bad?

Microsoft has never been good at upgrades. You'd think they would have it figured out by now, but nope.

      Upgrades or updates?

Of course windows isn't perfect, but Windows 10 upgrades in my experience has been pretty damned awesome. updates for Windows 10 have been only slightly less so.

Now server updates - that's another matter.

Well we know you enjoy praising Windows 10 so this lip service shouldn't surprise anyone.

Around these parts you'll get no love for anything Lenovo - After SuperFish, that company is blacklisted - if not for life, for a long while yet.

I have used a few Surface Pros - they seem fine for the most part. My wife has an SP5 - she seems to like it. I just rolled out an SP6 to my boss 6 months ago - no issues so far.

I agree with sticking with the Latitude series on Dell - this is a company laptop, so go with business gear.

I know JB has an XPS, and as far as I know, he likes it.

No, mine is an Inspiron, bought at MicroCenter when my previous machine died a day before an international trip to a client.

I try to stick to the latitudes for clients.

A nice simple solid option rather than going through all the steps to setup a Fedora DB server though.

Fedora DB is like a single line of commands, nothing could be simpler to set up for just MariaDB or similar.

After comparing the Coronet vs the MS E5 cloud app security license, I'm not seeing any alerts in Coronet that are already available in the cloud app security portal. The Coronet interface is just a improved and easier to work with interface. I'll be sticking with my E5 license for now since I'm getting the alerts I need with only paying for one E5 license vs paying per user with Coronet.

I wanted to update this post for anyone searching this in the future. After I actually went through all the devices that would have a hard coded static IP address, I was only presented with a list 15 devices throughout my entire infrastructure (5 branch offices). The list does not include server VM DNS entries though. Updating the DNS settings on the hard coded devices is definitely a better route than what I was trying to originally accomplish by keeping the original DC IP address. Attempting a work around with Active Directory would potentially cause much more chaos. Updating 15 devices and server IP DNS entries is going to take me less than an hour. So take the advice in this post as long as you know your network.

And what low voltage laws exist in your area that the cable needs to be fastened to the fasteners? That is insane!

      Not particularly, insane.

Bridle rings and j hooks are common means of support. But without securing wiring in them, to prevent puling too taught, you can very easily pull drop tile wires causing ceiling issues.

The NEC (National Electrical Code) does not have any specific rules on this, more than what I said in the above sentence, but some local ordinances do go beyond the NEC rules. This is quite common.

Just remember that per the Win10 EULA, you can only virtualize Win10 if it's the only licensed Windows VM.

I don't have it in front of me to verify, but that's what I remember reading on there. Will verify a bit later.

Thats not the issue. And not the case. VDI licensing gets you around that. But nothing gets you around the no-server use EULA.

Did not know VDI was involved in the OPs case.

Its the licensing for more than one Windows workstation on a server.

We've been a Cloudberry Provider for many years. We have some customers on Unitrends.

We are in the process of moving all our customers to Datto. It's partner channel only, so you'll have to find someone to work through.

We are putting an appliance onsite; with forever cloud copy.

I hate Unitrends for a plethora of reasons, and I just don't have a high level of confidence in Cloudberry anymore.

Also, I do like the idea of the onsite appliance for quick recovery rather than downloading fro the cloud (current Cloudberry setup).

Datto's backups are all stored P2V, you can spin up a VM of someone's PC or your server in about 40 seconds. I like this part.

Datto restore aren't that fast as far as I have tried and we have many appliances.

In what way? The VMs sitting on our local Datto appliance are up and running in about 40 seconds.
Same for those we spin up in the cloud.

Now bringing a full system restore down from cloud storage can only be as fast as your ISP connection.

What are your resources on the VM? Like are you running a VM with 80 GB of Data or TB of Data?

      Most are 150GBish

Yeah, That I can spin up fast. But we have some clients with VMs that have about 2 to 4 TB so 40 seconds is not that realistic for that size but still fast.

Have you considered splitting their OS from that much data?

That is how they are, OS is about 150 GB to 200 GB tops. Other VHD/VHDX are for Data.

@scottalanmiller Thanks for you insight Scott. You make great points. I will stick with a Fedora or Centos OS with the NFS package instead after reading your comments. That is the slap in the face I needed.

LOL. It's certainly nothing against DietPi. And if you are running ON a Raspberry Pi, I'd certainly think trying that out would make sense (where it is a production release already.) RP is a very different animal from server hardware, so different needs, different sensible tunings and so forth. For the needs of a normal RP deployment, DP sounds like a good starting point. I've not played with it, so can't endorse it, but it looks perfectly fine for that.
