    • RE: Remote Access for home user

@fuznutz04 said in Remote Access for home user:

I have a friend that has a small business. (2 people) They have an office PC and a home PC. She needs to remote into her home PC from her office PC on a daily basis. Previously, up until last week, I had them connecting via AnyDesk. This was starting to have issues and would be super laggy and would disconnect occasionally. So, I installed Screen Connect as a test and installed an agent on the Home PC. Then from the office PC, I would connect to the home PC. This worked well during my 15 minute test session when I installed it.

However, They are telling me now that many times a day, they attempt to connect to the home PC running the agent and just get the message "Waiting for your guest." Does anyone else get this with screenconnect agents?

Is there a better alternative for basic, remote access? (preferably free)

ZeroTier, preferably restricted to RDP only, on both devices and use RDP.

      On mobile phones.
A comma is a pause A semi colon is a wait.
      Examples.
      8005551212,101 - pauses ~3 seconds then dials the 101
8005551212;101 - waits indefinitely for you to tell it to dial the 101 by punching a button.

    • RE: Getting up and running with ER-X?

@Pete-S said in Getting up and running with ER-X?:

Any recommendations on how I should get up to speed on this? What should be my first step? Where do I start?

The ER-X is annoying because you have to power it up and connect to eth0 with a static IP in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. The Entire ER line is like that, but all the other devices have a console port to get around that.

      1. Download the current firmware to your laptop.
        https://dl.ui.com/firmwares/edgemax/v2.0.8-hotfix.1/ER-e50.v2.0.8-hotfix.1.5278088.tar
      2. Power up the ER-X
      3. Set your laptop to 192.168.1.2/24 and connect to eth0
      4. Pop a browser to 192.168.1.1
      5. log in with ubnt/ubnt
      6. Update the firmware and reboot
      7. Run the setup wizard
        870df39c-b5c0-4fe6-bf61-4e842f996eec-image.png
      8. Disconnect from eth0.
      9. Put your internet on eth0 and your network on eth1

After that, you should have a working router and can start to play with other settings.

@black3dynamite said in Vultr Firewall added Cloudflare:

@JaredBusch care to explain why selecting cloudflare instead of just allowing port 80 and 443?

I'm only allowing Cloudflare IP blocks on the HTTP/S ports.

That means nothing can possibly hit my server by IP. It is 100% safe from direct attacks.

    • RE: Changing subnet mask?

@siringo said in Changing subnet mask?:

For example, If I get the Cisco gear changed to /24 on weekend 1, will everything still communicate & work fine until I can change the other gear on weekend 2??

I know the subnets are different, but with all devices having 10.0.0.x addresses I'm thinking they still may be seen by the /24 devices????

      Does that make sense?

Anything in the larger subnet can talk to the smaller subnet.

The smaller subnet cannot talk to the larger subnet beyond its boundary.

No one cares about switches. They should be DHCP anyway.

      1. Export everything in your current DHCP scope to CSV and then update the DHCP scope to have a lease time < 24 hours. I like to use 8.
      2. Wait until the old lease expires. Sadly it may be a month if it was an old SBS Wizard.
Devices are supposed to try and renew at the halfway point, but you cannot count on it.
      3. While you wait, set DHCP reservations for anything that needs a fixed address.
      4. While you wait, find everything on your network with nmap and compare that to the things in DHCP. Change everything you find that is not in DHCP to DHCP or DHCP reservations.
About the only thing that will not be DHCP is the DC itself, the hypervisor(s), and the router.
      5. Set your workstation with a static IP and a /8 subnet for the duration.
      6. Update the static devices, except the DC and the router, with the new /24 subnet.
      7. Continue waiting for the old lease time to go by, or reboot All.Of.The.Things
      8. Validate everything is now in DHCP with valid expiration dates.
      9. Change the hypervisor(s), router, and DC to the /24 subnet
      10. Change your workstation back to DHCP.

Then move our systems to a cloud somewhere. Build out a site to site to a their datacenter and slowly build / upgrade things.

You need to start by stopping and learning the right terms for the things you want.

You used the word cloud and it has zero to do with what you stated want to do. Moving into a colo is not moving into a cloud.

Cloud computing is a very specific task that may or may not be something that is right for your workload.

      Let's do that.

@mmicha said in Where to start...:

My thought is that first step should be get the email to Exchange Online.

This is absolutely where you should start first. exchange 2013 is EoL soon. No reason to wait until it is dead. Additionally, on-prem Exchange has been under extremely heavy attack for months.

Exchange Online Plan 1 is $4/u/m retail. If you use a partner like DCW (paging @Yonah-S), you can get it all handled in easy monthly net terms billing. Some plan even have a minor discount off of retail.

OK Hive mind - I'm looking for opinions.

An iPad 2 - released in 2011, and not updated since iOS 9.3.5 in August 25, 2016.

Would you consider this a secure device today?

iPad 2 is no longer updatable, so no. It is not a secure device.

@Breffni-Potter said in Home business ideas for transition out of 9-5?:

I'm going to use a childish example.

Great example, let me break it up.

I hire you, to go into bakeries and pick the best baker for me.

This is the consultant doing research part that the client will be paying you for your time.

Now, you are down to 2 bakeries.

This is where a consultant then will stop and build a pro con of the final recommendations.

One of them, says they will give you some money if your client buys from them. The other does not.

This is where the salesperson will go.

Now, your client finds out about this, how does that affect your relationship and the work you delivered for them?

You will no longer ever get called to be a consultant, because you are a paid sales guy for bakery #1.

Renegotiate or move on. Well, unless you like getting screwed.

i prefer google hangouts 🙂 the one thing about google+ that i like.

I too prefer hangouts for long term group chats.

But there have been plenty of times (on any forum I have ever been on) that i have had a PM going with someone and would have loved to be able to pull another person in suddenly.

Hangouts and Skype work great, but require adding to circles/contacts and all that for interaction. A forum chat is simpler and works great for a simple quick conversation. Hence the term Chat.

@irj Try and change her mindset that just because that one is more, is it that much better quality to pay more for it.

I've been winning battles throughout our relationship, but I have yet to win the war. I have gotten her shopping at thrift shops and second hand stores which I know she would have never done before we met.

I have gotten her to see the big picture and she will now buy something for $200 instead of $300, but not $2 instead of $3. Which actually add up to be alot more money in the long run.

You sir are impressive. These are battles I don't think I'll ever win. I fight the good fight but have yet to win even one.

It all started with a couch actually. Of course she wanted Kane's or some other big name expensive furniture retailer, and when I told her it wasn't in my budget and I'll be damned if I ever in my life finance a couch. She then started looking at junky retailers like ikea, and some other local junky overpriced furniture places. A few days later I came home with a couch from the thrift store that I bought for $250 that was very similar to what we were looking at for $2500.

That was the biggest win I've had. I have nothing against $2500 couches, but we have two kids under 3 years old so anything we get will be trashed anyway.

IKEA furniture is actually fairly decent. The real hangup most people have with it comes down to it is not "heirloom" or I can't keep it for 40 years and pass it down to my kids.

Well fuck that shit, I don't ant my parents' 1970's furniture. I don't care if it is perfect condition solid oak.
