      there's no respect
i'm an older worker now and people think you don't know anything because you don't know about the latest xyz.
truth be told, I don't know about the latest xyz because i've seen that type of thing before and it had limited market appeal and folded after 5 years

the less experienced generally see initial benefits
the more experienced generally see initial benefits, long term issues, growth pathways and so on.

getting from 25 yo to 50 yo doesn't take long, you should always have your ears open ready to learn and always treat people respectfully.

    • RE: Windows 11 versus 10

I just hate these bloody upgrades or whatever you want to call them.

When I was younger it was exciting/interesting, now it's just a PITA.

I hate them because I know they will move or make you have to do something unimportant, that you have always done, be done differently. Where's notepad? Oh it's called Scribbler now. Where's Windows Explorer? Oh it's called File Finder.

Why do we have to learn new names for the same old crap.

Imagine doing that with cars. Press the accelerator, oh it's called the Make it faster button now!

I don't care about the new tech tricks and improvements, I just want to use my PC and get my work done so my day is as stress free as possible.

Old grumpy bastard complaining, yeah, probably. Don't worry, it'll happen to you.

      good morning, 9:22am.

got the word yesterday that we're expecting back on site from the 12th onwards. such ashame, the past many months have been some of the most productive, interesting & joyful with regards to work, of my last 10 years.

normally i move from site to site everyday, forgetting what I did last and wasting time settling into the newly arrived at site each time I arrive.

the past few months i've rekindled my interest in IT coz I had time to sit in one place, complete tasks & investigate new things.

I'm going to spend the time between now and the 12th trying to work out how I can run my work life from the cloud, so everytime I arrive at a new workplace, my desktop will still have tasks, jobs, notes open from the previous site, if that makes any sense.

and what the hell is a Stroopwafel??? ^^^

they asked for a rate sheet incase they need me to come in and help with something.
i'm loathed to help at all following the way i've been treated.
if i do help, the rate will be astronomical.

a great example of bridge burning.

Brand new around here. I see some people here I know of from elsewhere.
Currently enjoying what must one of the last few beautiful sunny days down here before winter sets in for 4 solid cold miserable months.

Wondering who the imbecile was that convinced the world to stop placing LEDs in Num Lock and Caps Lock keys was.

It's a toss up between intermittant mouse pointer movement & not knowing if your number / caps lock is on as to which is the most annoying thing.

That person "will be the first up against the wall when the revolution comes".

    • RE: Proxmox on Ubuntu

@travisdh1 Thanks Travis. I was thinking about this last night.

I agree, I'd be better off running up a new instance of W11, installing hyper-V and running a Ubuntu VM as well as my W11 workstation so I can switch between the two.

I've played with Proxmox before, It's a good and easy product to use.

      Thanks again.

    • Proxmox on Ubuntu

Kicking off a little project to keep me busy.

I'm not a Linux person, but it's time for my 'I wonder if I can use Linux instead of Windows?' project that I do every 10 years or so.

Q1: Can I install Proxmox on Ubuntu desktop?

Q2: I'll be using Proxmox as I'll need to use my W11 PC at work. Is there a better distro than Ubuntu I could use? It must be Windows user friendly.

Q3: Is there a better Hypervisor I could use other than Proxmox?

      That's it for now.

      Thanks for any help.

      @siringo that's pretty funny.
Going to cause all sorts of fun and games for them.

Over here, all the public schools have a fibre connectionstandard. Not sure about the speed these days but they were all pretty well the same across the entire state.
No room for interesting alternative options like star link.

I would expect that some of them or at least the private schools out in the sticksbare now on NBN Skymuster.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. It's home accounts with Star Link, all schools have fibre straight into Telstra corporate connection or whatever it's called now.

I'm thinking of getting Star Link, just wondering if it causes a problem accessing ABC iVew and SBS On Demand etc???? I wouldn't think it does, or if it did, I reckon it'd be fixed by now.

Here's something that me be of interest.

Found out that folks down here who use Star Link are assigned US based IP addresses.

Found this out coz when teachers go to log into their Department based authentication thing, they get rejected coz the IP address is not assigned to Australia / APAC etc etc.

Don't know if that is still going on?

We've been using Acer and Asus for a few years now and are SO much happier. Hardware costs a fraction as much and just works. Just bought another laptop this week, $299. Can't beat that. And staff is super happy with that gear.

We use alot of Acer gear in the schools I look after. The only problem we have with it physical. Cases come apart, screws fall out, keyboard keys pop off.

But that's with kids & staff using them who really don't give a rat's ass what happens to them.

They are pretty reliable and loaded with hardware.

I love the Lenovo keyboards though.

Just realized that 2024 will be TWENTY YEARS since IBM shed its Intel server and end point business (sold it to Lenovo.) It's been a full two decades and people still regularly mistake laptops as being IBM devices today. That's like 4-5 IT generations later.

Ha. Was thinking about this the other day. Wasn't one of the big things with that was that Lenovo were a Chinese company?

Oh, I'll never buy one of those. 😉

Being a Chinese company has nothing to do with why I'd never touch Lenovo and recommend any company that has them immediately replace Lenovo gear.

Why is that my good man?

20 years ago it was because they were Chinese and nothing good ever comes out of China, well 20 years ago that was general mood.

They're still loading spyware via drivers. I'll grant that it's been around a year since I was forced to do a factory install to see it for myself, but at this point they've been so bad for so long they can't be trusted.

How do 'we' they're loading spyware in their drivers?

Do we know what the spyware does?

2024 is a "big" year for me in my career...

35 years working in IT and software engineering
      25 years at NTG specifically

Wow that makes you feel old. 2024 is the year that I will have had more time working in my career than my dad did in his before retirement! He retired at 34 years in his field (but 38 years total working.) I'll be 35 years in my field (but just 35 years total working.)

First job at 14 in a garage.

First job in electronics, early 80s.

First job in IT in 89.

Ha, that's 35 years as well. Bugger me. I've blasted past My father so have my siblings and with the cost of living on steroids, we all may work into our 70s?

It's a great time to be alive.
