It's a nice area being so close to the Adirondacks. It doesn't matter if there a 100 good jobs there, you only need one. 🙂

I think you are quoting me there, lol. I say that all of the time.

Let's not forget "IT isn't local" as well.

But, boy oh boy, when I come across someone that shines, puts in the 115%, and makes it known that they are truly putting it in by the work they are doing I will go out of my way to compliment them.

Most of us that put in the 115% don't hear that kind of feedback very often.

In development, they are called 10xers. There is basically the productivity of a normal developer is 1x. And almost no one does 2x or 3x. But a small subset does 10x the work of a normal person. It's not a bell curve like you'd expect.

@scottalanmiller said in How critical is SSD on a web server?:

Web servers typically do not benefit from extra space, either. basically web servers don't use storage in any way. But SSDs at least give you faster boot times, swap space, updates, etc. Extra space would give us literally nothing, in our cases.

Are your DBs for your WP servers running on the same or different hosts from WP?

You want them on the same for performance. There is no advantage to centralization except a tiny bit of consolidation that would come at a cost of performance and reliability to the customers. If they are on a separate box there are more points of failure to worry about, more noisy neighbour risks, and huge latency bumps.

      That makes sense.

I always fix my KVM to use /home/virtualmachines for the VMs. 🙂

I decided to delete it. I am able to RDP into Windows if I need it anyway. My total disk size is only 128GB. So I dont really have room for a 30GB VM anyway.

How can I do full disk encryption post installation on Fedora?

Do you need encryption on the OS for some reason? General you'd just encrypt /home. That assumes the system is secured properly in the first place.

I don't know how to enable full day of encryption after installation of the top of my head. Reinstalling is really easy tho, just backup and restore /home. All you're settings should persist with just that, and reinstalling you're programs is easy and quick as well.

hmmm... So no real reason to encrypt the OS? If my laptop is lost, and a someone resets password, will they be able to access my home directory?

No, that's the point of encryption.

So just encrypting the home directory will accomplish what I need?

      Yes.

@IRJ lmao that's intense. You must have missed the updated one. It asks you how many numbers to generate with this one. If the number you're using is huge you may want to use /dev/urandom instead of $RANDOM%, which I think can only generate a number as big as like 37,000 or something?

@bnrstnr said in How can a split a number into unequal parts?:

Here's your script to specify how many numbers to generate

      #!/bin/bash echo "How many numbers to generate?" read -r quant; echo "Enter Number"; read -r num; step="2"; answer=$(((RANDOM % $num)+1)); newnum=$(expr "$num" - "$answer"); total=$answer; string="$answer"; while [ $step -lt $quant ] do answer=$(((RANDOM % $newnum)+1)); newnum=$(expr "$newnum" - "$answer"); string="$string"+"$answer"; total=$(expr "$total" + "$answer"); ((step++)); done answer=$(expr "$num" - "$total"); string="$string"+"$answer"; echo $string;

There is a chance that you could generate a random number right out the gate that's too large to allow the number you specified... you could just rerun the script and try again at that point

what version of python does it want?

We do Kickstart installs. It's pretty easy.

Kickstart with some form of change management tool (ansible?) Would probably be the best bet.

Yeah that's what we do. Ansible builds the kickstart configs and PXE boot files from a YAML dictionary that defines all of the systems.

@Kelly and @scottalanmiller Here is the outline for CISSP-ISSAP. What do you think I should brush up on?

      https://www.isc2.org/-/media/ISC2/Certifications/Exam-Outlines/ISSAP-Exam-Outline.ashx

Without knowing more about your background and practical experience it is hard to say for certain. Logging is going to be key for most of the areas. With an eye towards Domain 3: Infrastructure Security in particular (since your questions in this thread have been about networking) I would say that you should make certain that you understand the concepts at a high level. Since this vendor agnostic and multiple choice it is likely (I've never taken a CISSP exam) that the questions are going to be aimed towards the right way to implement these things, but not the particulars of how to do it. You're going to need to understand the whys more than the hows for most of those things. Why does out of band configuration matter? What is access control segmentation, etc. If they're moving in response to the market there will probably be a number of questions on securing WiFi and VoIP.

If you're weak on PKI that could really trip you up as well. In general it doesn't sound terribly difficult so long as you have all of the basic concepts and can find your way around the various compliance laws.

So maybe I'll be OK. We covered all of that in CISSP. I'm sure this will dive in deeper, but I probably already have enough base knowledge. I'm going to order the book and read through it and see if I can understand everything

I'd think so. It would probably be worth your while to compare the stated purposes/jobs differences are for the two exams and focus your energy in those categories.

A weakness is Katello is a huge pain to set up. I literally used forklift to get a Vagrant box up and then used that Vagrant box as a long living VM.

We had Red Hat come out and setup Satellite for us.

Cheater  yeah I can see why you would want that. I wouldnt want to do that myself in prod without someone there
