@CCWTech With most things being end to end encrypted, I'm wondering if aside from - I can see others devices and they can see mine is really much of an issue or if getting my own router and then subjecting myself to double nat would be the better option.

Apartment complexes, use your own router or not...posted in IT Discussion
Many apartment complexes offer internet as part of the rent. I suspect it's shared. Aside from the shared bandwidth concern of maybe not being fast enough, would using your own router be a good idea (I suspect you are then ending up with double NAT)?

This always confuses me when setting up Ubuntu Server. What is "SEARCH DOMAINS". I would think it would be easy to find an answer online, but I am coming up blank.

I know in a pinch you can use AnyDesk, it works well. Check DWS Service
Thanks. I'll take a look.

RE: Alternative to Screenconnect (and Mesh Central)posted in IT Discussion
@travisdh1 Still planning on using Mesh, it's just at times Mesh is offline or won't send a particular key combo, etc...
I've been looking into Rust, that may be an option.

Alternative to Screenconnect (and Mesh Central)posted in IT Discussion
We currently use Mesh Central as our primary software for remoting into machines.
We currently use ScreenConnect as a backup solution (when Mesh has problems, etc.)However, ScreenConnect requires a Windows server (it technically works on Linux, but is not supported and for many reasons has poor performance).
I'm looking for suggestions for an alternate to Screenconnect that isn't Mesh Central. We have about 10 users and 2500 machines. I would like to host myself on something like VULTR.
SELF HOSTED, LOW COST or FREE is a HUGE plus.

RE: How to get Chrome to remember which monitors to open onposted in IT Discussion
@Obsolesce said in How to get Chrome to remember which monitors to open on:
@CCWTech download the MS power toys and use fancy zones.
Unless I am missing something, it looks like that won't work. It all opens in ONE Window. So I don't see that it will drag the tabs the way they were...
And just this evening I went to watch TV and I came back... Guess what? Windows decided to reboot for updates while I was gone...
I gotta go back to Ubuntu I suppose... I just wish there were better games for it...

@DustinB3403 I wish I could add two more honestly! But it's so frustrating because with Ubuntu, it just worked... If only there were more apps written for Ubuntu!

RE: How to get Chrome to remember which monitors to open onposted in IT Discussion
@DustinB3403 I do have a primary set, however maybe photos will help. On reboot I get All the tabs open I set to open on startup, but ALL one one 'Window' of Chrome or on one screen. I got spoiled because on Ubuntu it remembers WHICH monitor you had which tabs open. Photos coming...

How to get Chrome to remember which monitors to open onposted in IT Discussion
I am using Windows 11. This worked fine on Ubuntu but I needed to switch to Windows in order to support other apps.
Maybe I am asking too much but I have 4 screens. I have Chrome open on each screen and about 8 tabs open on each screen.
But, when I reboot, Chrome remembers the tabs I have open, but puts them all on one screen and I have to then re-arrange each time. It's quite a pain, especially with how often Windows makes you reboot.
Is there anything I can do to get Chrome to open as I want it to?

Blocking of sites based on geographical locationposted in Water Closet
Not sure if this goes in IT Discussion or Water Closet because it's more of a RANT than an IT Problem.
I have ranted previously on this, but still finding it as common behavior.
Will someone PLEASE tell IT security departments that geoblocking is insanely stupid?
You have to believe that people on vacation in Central America (or living abroad there) is a huge thread, and/or that hackers don't know how to use VPN or otherwise spoof their IP addresses.

V2V Migration - Going from Hyper-V to ESXiposted in IT Discussion
We have a physical box running Hyper-V and need to go to ESXi
I know VMware has a converter and Starwind has one.Anyone use either of these tools and can give some feedback?
The starwind one looks pretty simple but it scars me how easy it makes it look. Is this a live migration or does it shut the VM off? (Or do I need to shut it down first)
Any help is appreciated. I know @Oksana is here, maybe she can give some input.

UBUNTU Desktop with full disk encryption with TPMposted in IT Discussion
I'm going to be doing a fresh install of 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat in a few days. In the past when I have installed UBUNTU I haven't been able to get the automatic disk unlocking to work and have to put in the encryption password in order to boot.
Anyone have a guide to follow for setting this up right? Ideally I'd like to just have to put in my Ubuntu PW and not a disk encryption key each time.
I am running brand new hardware so it should be quite capable. I am thinking I am missing a bios setting or something...
