management - you mean anyone who it's IT. For most it seems if you say you are IT, then they assume you know anything/everything to do with computers. Plus they lump things that aren't IT into IT.

And not just broad knowledge, but historic and insanely current, too. That computer from thirty years ago that is nothing like any machine today and for which there is no documentation; you know all about that thing, right? And this new technology that just released this morning while you were busy in a meeting and haven't even been to your desk yet, you've already studied it and have years of experience on it, right?

@Danp a distro upgrade would likely be the easier approach. I'm performing this now on my system.

I had pretty good success with pfSense in the past. It features a built-in captive portal and guest vouchers. Stable, reliable and highly customizable. Plus there's no need for spezialized access points or wireless controllers.

There's also comprehensive data storage for Russian customers, allowing you to control via OU which staff data goes to servers located in Russia.

If I remember correctly, Tyco was a 'player' in the model railroading milieu at the time as well.

In the power boxes, yes, but not in the trains themselves I don't think.

Did this pop up again at SW?

Again today, too. Apparently Lenovo is selling FakeRAID on their "servers" now along with all of the other problems. Of course, if a machine has FakeRAID, it's not a server by any normal definition.

WOW... just wow - as if they couldn't fall any further, and they find a way...

What Synology has done, to make this claim kinda legit, is look at what disks "can" stream (which is more than is listed here) and added the "cap" of the network. So if you do a contrived operation that pushes the drives to their throughput limit (a useless number hence why we don't measure drives by that metric) but tells us nothing about performance. That could be just two or three IOPS producing that limit. But in the real world, that's not useful.

So it's kind of the same as that thread from long ago where you advised get a HDS if you get a SAN, but don't get a SAN? If you're going to get UTM, get Palo Alto, but don't get a UTM.

      Exactly 🙂

@scottalanmiller said in Considering Ubiquiti Wireless:

Yes, they keep operating. The controller is just remote configuration, it's not the brains of the device. You dont even need a controller at all. It is just for initial setup.

@scottalanmiller said in Considering Ubiquiti Wireless:

Of course keeping a controller is recommended. Just saying it isn't necessary.

Yep, you don't NEED a controller after configuration, but I would leave one running. It will keep stats on the APs for you.
I don't use RADIUS currently, so I'm not sure if that would require a controller or not?

I also haven't read up on roaming. I know it works seamlessly, I just don't know if a controller is required for that to function or not.

The only thing you absolutely need to leave a controller running all the time for is if you want to present a landing page on a guest network. At least when I set ours up a year ago that's how it was.

I don't have it in "production" any more. I have a few things at home set up on it. I originally had a separate zone for it. Everything in my house is pa.jhbcomputers.com so the zone for ZT was zt.jhbcomputers.com. Now I just have a local hosts file I can push out to whatever I want.

I'm not really using it that much though. I'm mostly just tunneling through my jump box.

I'd put NTG in that category. Year after year growth. But it's still very slow. But it is not a steady state, it's annual improvements. Two steps forward, one step back, but still more forward than back.
