Still working on it.
Does it take that long or are you setting up the VMs and configuration?
More like over dramatizing it because it is not his preferred platform.
I was just assisting, actually took that long. Kept running into authentication problems. Environment does not have AD.
I see, sometimes AD is helpful

I've got a blog post for that... it makes it super quick and easy (well, considering the fact you even have to worry about doing that stuff to begin with).

working on a nightmare problem with a 5506 wlc not handling wireless traffic too happily. wireless clients can ping some VMs on a host but not others. wireless clients can't ping the physical host, but can ping a mock up unused nic in the server I setup.

If he is doing it today, it will almost certainly be 4.0.10.
You do not choose your firmware. You simply click update.

Lol, I can hear the disdain on that

Installing a freaking old Centricity application, people need to upgrade apps for it to work with Windows 10!

Installing it is easy, getting everything else setup once it's "running" that you generally need to have a complete system is what takes time and planning.

"Generally" need is where we get into very different opinions. For us, we generally need very little else as our customers generally have agent based backups or scripted backups and so no backup discussion or configuration is needed.
For our SMB clients, it's rare that much is needed beyond a basic install and then the VM installs.
