I did an "In My Area" search and all that came up where Time Warner at no more than 5Mb/s and FiOS DLS at less than 1Mb/s. 😞

Utica and Rome I know have Verizon DSL and TWC but I don't think they have FiOS. It's a poorer demographic, sadly...

It's sad because other than that one issue, Utica has some amazing downtown office space.

Pfsense doesn't do well performance wise virtalized. At least it didn't used to. I think they have a pay for version optimized for VM platforms.

It's just FreeBSD plus drivers, right? It should do as well as FreeBSD does on whatever platform is in question. That FreeBSD doesn't have PV support for Xen is a major drawback to FreeBSD as a platform in general. But it should only be a question of drivers, in general.

@scottalanmiller The amount of feature upgrades they do monthly is fantastic. I've never been disappointed in their product. Support is pretty damn quick as well.

You can use something like netstat to get a list of adapters and then cycle through them. That would work easily enough.

      for i in $(netstat -i | cut -d' ' -f1 | grep -v Iface | grep -v lo | grep -v Kernel); do ethtool -S $i; done

And the exact problem I am having is that the Dynamics NAV SQL Server and the RDS server when both put on Pertino were routing all traffic over Pertino instead of locally. I took the SQL server out of the network (made its own network) and everything started working again.

What Pertino is waiting on me for is some packet captures that I have not had time to create.

Because I seen odd behavior of LAN devices without Pertino also having problems access SQL. Those devices have the NAV client locally installed.

@dengelhardt that's a good point that people often miss - there are cases where using VLANs unnecessarily can cause traffic to have to "loop" through a router to return to the same device. In the case of VoIP phones acting as small switches at the desk it's the switch inside the phone doing it.

I had to deal with a network just a few weeks ago that had five routers and three switches, one of which was still on FastEthernet (10/100.)
They managed to make nearly all traffic have to pass through the slow switch for nearly everything. And some things looped through routers that were attached on both ends to the same VLAN!! It was insane.

The VM is where I'm trying to access my main physical workstation from. I doubt ESXi is filtering anything.

I don't have any filtering setup that I know of at least.

InfoWorld reports on OpenDaylight Helium's status.

OpenDaylight is a really important but not well understood project. Interesting stuff, though.

It's going to take virtualization to a whole new level and redefine how we approach traditional networking. Pertino is a trailblazer with this tech. Can't wait to see what else this project has in store.

Always good to check with upper management.

"Hey boss' boss, just wanted to run this by you. My boss needs me to document trivial IT tasks that the intern (that we don't have) should be able to look up without a problem and spend time and company money maintaining them so that he, not I, can repeatedly do entry level tasks without needing to get assistance from elsewhere. I'm happy to do this but this puts us at risk of the documentation being wrong since I am just making copies of the industry or vendor documentation, and because it is impossible to keep every internal doc continuously in sync with the latest vendor changes, guidelines and best practices. Just wanted to make sure that you agree that making this kind of documentation, all for one person, is a good use of government financial resources?"
