They are a marketing company and so a ton of the staff are marketing roles. Whether it is physical stuff like graphic artists that make ads to marketing consultants for vendors. Then they have a massive media department that does full TV style production with studios, editing, writing, etc. Then there is the normal IT staff, but that's like three or four people. Lots of management. Community management I feel was five or six people last that I was there. There is a content generation department. Sales was a huge department. There is a group that does conferences. Account management. Regional management. And then there was a group that made the software too and that team was enormous. You'd think that it was just one or two people but they had dozens of them; even almost ten years ago. What they all do we could never figure out, but there were tons. Then there is product support teams, Q&A and stuff like that.
More to this end--I deal with 3 people directly for our account.

It is such a shame. I do feel bad for those who are gone and only hope they can find something better. 12% is not small.
I think they recently removed the job board section (not that I used it), perhaps it would have been better to leave such a section up to help those people to find new jobs before removal. Probably wouldn't have helped them, but it is less cruel that way.Remove job page, sack people < Sack people, help them use the page to find job (possibly), remove job page.

Wow, just saw this news... but I'm not that surprised considering the activity over there had slowed to a trickle (and was often noob questions from people who have no business setting up systems). Plus the fact that they had been actively alienating their long time users. When my account got put into the moderation time out corner this last time, I stopped posting there altogether. If they cancel spiceworld, I better get my money back.
I was wondering where you went over there.

I'm organizing folks to help find people new jobs here:

Yup, done. No more technical help from me (what little that amounts to). Funny thing was that I got more best answers / helpful posts when I was being snarky.

Wow, 12%... that's really sad. I've been reading through the comments here but don't see why they cut so many jobs. They may have debt, but 12%? That's crazy.

12% is the layoff number, not the cut number. It's more like 20% we hear.
-
There's some other people that voluntarily left before the layoffs were announced, so I hear.

If 12% is made up of people laid off, what is the other 8% made up of? Did those people quit or something?

Even if Spiceworks isn't quite your thing today, many of us have benefited in some way from a Spiceworks program at some point, and more importantly, probably know someone who was affected, so keep your eyes open for job opportunities that you can share with these former Spiceworks employees to help them get back on their feet soon.

If you look at their business model, it's unlikely that shedding 12% is anywhere near enough, but shedding any more would likely have triggered employee protections (requirements for warning, severance and things like that.) But they've never had revenue anywhere close to being able to support the staff size. If they don't have VC money flowing in to keep them running, they can't keep the staff around. I'd expect a minimum of 80% cuts unless some miracle happens. It's just a matter of waiting out the layoff time locks so that they can shed what they need. And, hopefully, people will find other work and leave voluntarily speeding up the process.

@Nic has started a thread just for that: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1680735-spiceheads-and-green-guys-gals-assemble
Please go on over and show them all some love!

Maybe a related thread here would make sense. Having a thread like that AT the company that just laid you off might not be ideal for employers looking for people.

@Minion-Queen I put a link to the jobs that are available in Japan. We are based in Fukouka, but that doesn't mean you'll stay there
If anyone wants to make a huge jump to another country, we are growing fast there.
-
@Minion-Queen , I was going to say that too! SW has mentioned similar promotions to xByte on several occasions.

Yeah, I already knew that.
