    • RE: Windows 10 goes to sleep outside listed sleep times

@Dashrender : I literally JUST went through this with a client. All GPO's configured to monitor sleep & lock after 15 minutes which, after a fresh reboot, was stable.
Once the monitor went to sleep and was wakened, the systems would go to full sleep every 2 minutes.
I had to apply the same registry "hack" via GPO.

This was extremely annoying to the staff and made us look pretty incompetent as the control panel, powercfg.exe, etc all showed that the settings were being applied properly.

      Ugh..

@JaredBusch: Thanks for the reply. I'm not looking to create a ticket on a schedule, I'm looking for a way to schedule tickets. e.g. Assign a time that this ticket needs to be worked on. ConnectWise does perfectly whereas you can -- directly from the ticket entry screen -- assign a tech and a time to work on (say, Monday at 11:30am for 30 minutes). Unfortunately, the time/cost for CW just isn't within scope currently.

Agreed. Long gone are the days when "hee hee, I'm not good with computers" was a viable excuse. Most of the folks legitimately old enough to say that are retired now. Everybody else, get with the program.

Funny that you should say that. I recently on-boarded a new receptionist for a client who appears to be in her late-30s to early-40s. She just kept going on-and-on about how she "wasn't good with computers" and I still hear that a lot with people within my approximate age group (40ish).

I really fail to understand how these people get hired as these are the same individuals that cost the most in IT related charges. e.g. things that can easily be remedied by rebooting their computer, putting paper in a printer, or replacing the batteries in their wireless keyboard.

EDIT: <rant>I should state that I was there this past week and using this particular computer about 2 weeks after her on-boarding. I couldn't log into Windows and then noticed that the username was missing a character and the password kept appearing shorter than it should be. After finally logging in, I opened notepad and typed some words noting that 1/3 of the characters were dropped. The keyboard batteries were dying.
When I asked her about it she replied with "I don't use the keyboard that much and, when I do, it works just fine".
I watched her for a little while after I was finished and noticed that she typed at about 25 wpm giving the keyboard ample time to catch up. My typing at 90 wpm (which is roughly what a receptionist should type at I would think?) would give it fits. Don't even get me started about the "...don't use the keyboard" comment. What do you DO all day?!</rant>

Not the greatest answer but, its because my users know what "Start" means and when they are told to "Start and Log Off" they know exactly what I mean and where to move the mouse and which button to press.

Most of my users don't understand what "Right Click" mean. Yeah, its that bad! UGH

Its funny how users can manipulate their home pc's, create and send emails, scan, move, manipulate, attach files to emails and move all around. Then when they get to work, it all goes out the window and "I don't know how to do that!" Double UGH!

I understand. There are still so many users that completely "shut down" when faced with change. They don't even ATTEMPT to figure it out, they just mentally switch off. I understand that in my 75 year old mother, but don't understand how that's acceptable in a business setting in this day-and-age.

    • RE: Need to block a User GP for certain Machines

      @wrx7m : That's a simple one.
Go to Computer Config > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Option

Under Interactive logon: Machine inactivity limit set the timeout that you'd prefer.

Now, the above will only work for Server 2012 and above and Windows 10. If you're running 2008 through R2 or if your workstations are still Windows 7 then you'll have to do the following:

Computer Config > Policies > Administrative Templates > Personalization:

      Enable Screen Saver
      Password protect screen saver
Screen saver timeout (the important one)
Force specific screen saver (blank screen)

OMG, so this.. If using unattended upgrades, make sure autoremove is configured properly.
I had a box take a dump because it ran out of space in /boot with a ridiculous number of old kernels installed.
Trying to run autoremove failed because it requires some space to do its work.

Had to manually remove a bunch of files before autoremove could run...

@Reid-Cooper, unfortunately I had no one to spare today so they'll be going in tomorrow.

Really curious to see if it's the SW or the ISP.
If the former there's a simple solution: rip and replace time!
If the latter, that'll be a fun chat with the cable company...

@manxam Well that worked out then 🙂

I did. We're not ones for forcing tech on clients but there's a limit to client risks that we're willing to live with.
This particular client deals with a LOT of sensitive data and it always bothered me that they had a known vulnerable router in place that we had to admin with a 5 year old version of Firefox.

    • Alternatives to OpenVPN for FreePBX on cell phone...

We use Android phones here along with Zoiper to tie into our FreePBX instance for when we're out of the office/on-site.
Each device uses the OpenVPN client to connect to FreePBX but we've been experiencing massive battery drain issues using that client for months (today OpenVPN was responsible for 73% of my battery usage).
Is there an alternate AND SECURE way for users to connect back in to FreePBX using their cell phones aside from using OpenVPN?
I had tried using the responsive firewall but got locked out frequently.
Also tried dyndns apps for android but they sucked as much battery as OpenVPN and, often times, we'd be banned via the firewall before dyndns updated.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Alternatives to OpenVPN for FreePBX on cell phone...

I thought I was pretty clear in my OP but I suppose some clarification is in order: This is strictly so that we can connect Android phones to our FreePBX instance. I'm not at all concerned about encrypting / securing voice, just the successful registration of the Zoiper client.

OpenVPN was the only consistent way of getting mobile devices to keep their registration as we can whitelist the VPN ip subnet.

As mentioned, turning on the responsive firewall and using that instead of OpenVPN did not work out well as the IP addresses of the cell phones changes regularly and the firewall would randomly lock users out during re-registration. Perhaps there are some changes that we can make to either the client or FreePBX that will prevent this?

EDIT: When I said "AND SECURE", I was speaking of ensuring that FreePBX itself was kept as secure from "rogue users" as possible while fulfilling our requirement of allowing our mobile devices to register with the service.
