    • Creating a VoIP.ms SIP trunk

Log in to your VoIP.ms control panel and navigate to DID Numbers -> Order DID(s)
      0_1476638525991_upload-ef6f03c0-7ff3-4bb1-89a1-53a673a35157

Select the type of number wanted, local or toll free, and country it should be from. For this example we will go with a local number in the United States.
      0_1476638618099_upload-cdb31ad4-8379-48b7-90bf-061002010977

Select a state, from the left box or try your luck searching for a specific number in the right box. I will choose Illinois.
      0_1476638782028_upload-74e87da4-0493-4cd5-a939-05e0ba8e2be7

Now select a rate center. This is a legacy tie in to how phone numbers were originally assigned and the PSTN still has to maintain this. Select something in the town you want if you are worried about local people calling in without long distance charges.
      0_1476638922170_upload-05abb129-4c89-4b4d-a13d-f3145ca42754

Once you select a rate center, you will be presented with a list of phone numbers.
If the number has a little cell phone image after it, that number is capable of SMS is desired. You will need to select the number(s) you want, select the per minute plan, say no to the caller ID lookup, and then select a POP server near to your PBX. I have a Vultr instance in Chicago running FreePBX, so I will select the Chicago POP.

Scroll down to the Routing and select where this DID will be delivered. I like to have a sub account setup instead of using the main account just to add a little more obscurity to my SIP authentication. You can also setup fail over options here, but you have to previously configure things and that is beyond the scope of this initial setup.

Click Order DID and you are done. You will have a working phone number in about 60 seconds.

      0_1476665674064_upload-d7e4ee88-42af-46e6-8933-4ebca8d4289e

Click as follows to unselect and select everything as shown.
You can modify this if you desire, but I prefer to take this opportunity to force the users to change in order to help break their old habits.

VoIP.ms , and most other carriers requires the country code to be prepended. So for North America, you need to prepend a 1 for the 10 digit dialing.
      0_1476666013863_upload-ef59806f-2959-4921-be77-1e6aa2852488

      Click Submit and Apply Config.

You can now dial any US number by dialing the 10 digit (area code + phone number) syntax, and you can dial any international number with the traditional 011 + country code + number

    • RE: Ubiquiti Edge Router X questions.

Yes, you can power the unit with the same PoE injector. The ER-X does a passthrough only. It does not actually provide power to an AP itself. It simply siphons off power from the injector to power itself.

Yes there is a dual WAN wizard.

Yes in the current firmware (1.8.5), you can setup some QoS in the GUI. This was new in 1.8.0.

      Good thread to necro..

This morning the scale said 103.6kg (227.92 lbs)

I am 50 lbs over my lowest weight back in 2007.

I have started seriously watching my intake and such again because I am not happy where I am.

      I want to be under 90kg / 200lbs.

    • Part-time Helpdesk Tech needed in St Louis

Sorry, it is not a full time position.

@Bundy-Associates is looking for a helpdesk tech in the St. Louis area.

We need a person able to work on site at a specific location two days a week for 4 hours each day.

Beyond that all time can be worked from home or shared office space.

We are offering 20 hours a week with only the above site hours required at any certain time. The right person can easily prove themselves knowledgeable enough to get more hours.

@JaredBusch That is what it looks like if using the installation script.

Just want to be certain as I only have snapshots atm.

Safest thing to do is shutdown the VM and make a snapshot. Then boot back up and upgrade.

A shutdown VM is a perfectly safe restore point because there are no open DB calls and such.

@art_of_shred said in Cloud Computing vs. Hyperconvergence:

So what's holding HCI back? Anything?

In addition to what @scottalanmiller said, there is also the moving commodity line of IT infrastructure and services.

Fewer and fewer SMB need enough local compute power to warrant the cost of HCI hardware. The entry price point for @scale equipment is $25k. For what it provides, I believe this is a very good price point too.

The problem is my clients are reducing hardware to the point of only needing a single physical server to handle all of their local virtualization workloads.

A Dell from @xByteSean with a bunch of 4tb drives in raid10 and 128gb of ram handles so much and costs ~$6k.

    • EdgeRouter PoE high CPU usage

Entire client site suddenly went down a bit ago and then came back up.

Log in and check the router and find uptime is 10 minutes.

Well shit. Also the GUI was slow and the CPU graphic kept spiking.

Logged into the CLI and ran top to find that a bunch of UBNT utilities keep eating up the processor.
