So we hired a new IT Director in the last month or so.

He's didn't come from a large enterprise before, and is now having us give out local admin rights to many people. We've never given it to anyone outside of IT before. We've brought it up to him as a security concern, and not even sure how this will go with our auditing stuff. He says that's the way he's done it where he comes from, and it works much better. How should you address this?

      Fire him?

    • Upgrading ownCloud

If you run your own instance of ownCloud you will need to handle updating it also.

When I wrote my original How To on installing ownCloud, version 8.2.1 was current.

Well 8.2.2 is now out, and you should update as soon as possible because ownCloud always recommends that you never skip even incremental updates.
      T49uftz.jpg

Assuming that you did a standard repository based install, then the upgrade process is extremely simple.

Here are the commands for CentOS 7

      sudo yum -y update
      cd /var/www/html/owncloud
sudo -u apache php occ maintenance:mode --off
sudo -u apache php occ upgrade

    • RE: All Ubiquiti, all the time

I would start my plan with

      • 1x EdgeRouterLite
      • 1x EdgeSwitch (increase to cover ports needed or add EdgeSwitchLITE for non-PoE)
      • 4x Unifi AP-AC-LITE

      On the ERL

      • eth0 = WAN
      • eth1 = WAN2 (or unused)
      • eth2 = LAN or unused depending on VLAN requirement)
      • eth2.XX = VLAN XX (repeat as needed)

@stess said in Vultr $2.50 Instances Sold Out:

      I'm interested.

What OS should I start with. I have no idea what I am going to be doing with it. 😄

IMO, start with learning an application. Wordpress, FreePBX, whatever you want to learn.

Operating systems are a huge ball of wax and honestly take nothing to install. The problem is once installed, what do you do with it?

When you are this new, that is what happens. You do not even know enough to know what to do with a clean OS.

So instead install Nextcloud or WordPress, on CentOS 7 using one of my guides.

I try to always make one line comments in the guides for what each step is actually for.

This will give you experience dealing with CentOS 7 but with a purpose.

@scottalanmiller's stuff for installing things tends to scripts and one line concatenated commands.

These work well if all you want is the application running, but it is a useless learning tool.

    • ZeroTier + Active Directory Authentication

I am initially only getting ZT installed and will be seriously working my way through this tomorrow.

I already know I can do it, because I did the same thing with Pertino before they released their AD Connect add on.

I opened a thread on the ZeroTier forums (it is NodeBB!) a couple days ago and they have not worked up a process yet. So it is up to us 😛

Since ZT uses IPv4 and not IPv6, the hard part here is getting the DNS only resolving when desired. The original Pertino client was easy to get only AD auth working because it was IPv6 only.

@scottalanmiller on a related note, I had to go to the wayback machine to get your old post about Pertino and AD.

The problem with using IPv4 like this instruction says to do is that all DNS ends up going through and interal IP addresses get returned (as they should).

I do not want full mesh. I want AD Auth, nothing else. When you have full mesh it is easy.

Sounds like the beginning of some ridiculous Nazi themed B movie. In an attempt to turn the world blonde, a nazi spy dumped 160 gallons of H2O2 into an Olympic pool and.....

I'd watch it. I am a sucker for SciFi B movies.
