Every time I hear someone talk about how great vi is, I have an image of them using one of these still in my head....

vi is the way to go. For the basic editing it is stupid easy and is always present.

83 key keyboard. vi is the bees knees if you've only got 83 keys to work with. Nothing like a modern keyboard/editor. Even with nano, I never have to take my hands off the keyboard.
