IT Specialist/Generalist
What does this even mean? An IT person who specializes in generals?
Nope. An IT General of Specialists.
Instead of badges and honors they would have AOL CDs and Windows 3.1 floppy disks hanging off their coats.

Do any of you have experience with "Trouble Shooting"?
Nope, I'm a deadeye.

I still have something like 10 years of free AOL service.... gotta use it some how. . .

I take the "/" to mean two separate things:
- IT Specialist
- IT Generalist
In my opinion, IT Generalist is much better, as you'd be experienced and skilled in many IT areas (vs one)... therefore being much more able to innovate. If you specialize in one thing, you're pretty much useless in other areas.
The whole idea of "Jack of all trades. Master of none." is actually false.
Look at Elon Musk... he's considered an "Expert Generalist"... creating 4 multi-billion companies in completely separate fields, before age 45!
I read an article about him, which is where I got this "generalist" info from. I'll see if I can find it and link it. Great article by the way.
Edit: Found the article: https://qz.com/968101/how-elon-musk-learns-faster-and-better-than-everyone-else/

That's because that's not the full quote.
βA jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.β

Elon Musk's retention comes to play here hugely. I could read two books a day and not retain 75% of it. Memory is hugely important when attempting to learn anything. It also limits how much of each thing you can learn.

Don't undervalue yourself. You got time to learn the stuff you want to learn.

Being a generalist means you can handle the bulk of many issues. Being a specialist (while beneficial for some things) most often isn't wanted.

I do, but that is my future not my present. In the future I will be a Linux System Administrator, completely specialized.

Don't worry about the future. Worry about the now. You can worry about what is happening then, then. Focus on the now, now.

^^^ This. Don't get so caught up in the future that you forget to live your life in the present. I promise it's way more fun when you remember to enjoy the now.

It's pretty hard to do that as I'm very unhappy with my current level of knowledge, hence the books. If I reach a point where I feel solid in my knowledge that will change but if I never do I will likely change fields. Giving myself some time to reach these goals or to fail.

But if you obsess on it too much, you;ll be a sad panda by the time you're 40. You don't want to look back and regret not doing this or that because you were too busy studying all the time. Travel, do fun stuff with your lady, eat amazing meals, you'll still have time to learn and you'll have a better balance of life and work.
I'm far behind where others my age are in the field, but I wouldn't trade the path I took to get here for anything.
