As many of you know, I have a new hotel and restaurant. Right now we have an existing POS system and we do not like it. We are nearing the point where we have the option to replace it. So we are looking for recommendations. We are not tied to only considering free or open source options, but obviously those have some advantages - especially considering that we have the IT skills in house to run something ourselves. But we are open to ideas of whatever makes the most sense.
I've worked with clients, and my wife is a retail store manager. After all these years.... they all suck.
None of them have been open source tho, so digging into those would be my first place to look.

Every commercial solution I have ever used has sucked from an one perspective or another.
I have never looked at anything else for clients because they have no internal skills to keep it running and I am not going to be on call 24/7 for stupid issues.

I toyed around with Odoo's open source edition product in the lab and it seemed like a functional tool, I don't know how you'd tie it to a "cash register", but if it were me that needed this I'd likely take a better look at it.

My wife uses square on her iPad as a POS and I've seen a lot of places use square POS systems and clover POS systems.

I don’t have any experience with the product, but Zoho has a restaurant and hotel management option. I know you are a fan of some of their other products. Maybe this would be a good fit?

Running a POS in a hotel - There's one in America called Micro's - they have the ability to do room charges and are vey popular in Hotels for that reason. Aloha can do room charges too, but through a 3rd party PMS solution.
if you're running a restaurant in the hotel - stay away from Toast - Though I hear the system works well - it was created by 3 lawyers who hide things in the contracts and screw you in oblivion on Credit Card processing fees , hidden fees, surprise upgrade fee's etc.
All POS Systems have pitfalls and great attributes - My suggestion would be get Demo's of different POS systems and see which one fits best.

We have a lot of limits on those because of location. I like Clover and would likely use that in the States.

Checking those out for sure.

For restaurant: https://readytopay.com/
For going open source, I believe someone had created a POS for Tryton, but I think you'd probably be looking at creating your own module for the hotel side.

While I don't have anything I can really contribute on applications, I would expect that you would want something that will pair both the hotel and restaurant into the same app. And - will something 'separate' be needed if alcohol is sold? Don't know if that is a separate thing or not.

Gonna hop in on this one -
More times than not, selling alcohol can be done on the POS system - I've 'programmed' thousands of alcoholic drinks, different liquors, shots etc. into Aloha Systems - even bottle service buttons for Hotels that offer Champagne and Bars/clubs that offer bottle service.I don't think there's an all in one solution for Hotels and Restaurants. But Almost all of them will pair with some kind of Payment Management System to allow cross over to the Hotel side.

@wrcombs
Good to know. I don't know if I'll ever need it - but - it could come up in conversation down the road. -

Alcohol is all the same for us. Just another product.

I'm not sure how much we need for the hotel other than being able to take payments through it. We have a SaaS app that manages the hotel portion already.

Are there enforced liquor laws where you're at now?

Nope. 24x7, sell to basically anyone.

You mean a country that treats people as adults that can think for themselves. That's a great concept, we should try more of that here in the USA.

If you have to develop code to add drinks into their systems, I'd rather not use the tool. That seems so over the top. Do they support a lot of languages? Seems limiting.
