Refurbed Cisco gear? (from xByte)
-
I wanted to get feed back on if it is a good or bad idea to buy refurbed Cisco gear? I've heard the arguments for refurbed Dell servers and took this advice when I bought my last server (got it from xByte).
The Dell refurb process seems high quality (like I know a lot of the servers may have only been used for a very short period of time before the original buyer returned them for some reason and are backed by full Dell warranties). I'm not so sure how it works with Cisco refurbs.
I'm looking at buying switches and 3600 series APs (to add to our current wireless deployment) for our headquarters. I was also thinking of buying a refurbed 5508 wireless controller. I currently have a 5508 running the APs and was looking at pricing for SmartNet renewal and thought maybe it would be smarter to get a refurbed 5508 instead and just keep that onsite as a spare.
Thoughts on refurbed Cisco gear and if it's generally quality and a smart buy or something to stay away from?

I'm sure it's fine. No direct experience (I don't use Cisco) but if xByte is standing behind it, you should be all set. This isn't random used gear like eBay.

Well, they stand behind it for 90 days. Anything more and you have to buy support from their partner. You can also get Cisco coverage through SmartNet, so I suppose that is probably a good sign.

Not, "you can get," but "you must get," if you want firmware updates.

That alone started me on the path away from Cisco.

^This, firmware updates is the most annoying part to get from Cisco if you don't have a support.

How do you get security updates for the controllers and APs if you don't have SmartNet? And like normal I'm late to the game.
Yeah - no updates, no go. If your company doesn't want to pay for SmartNet, I think it's time to look to a whole new solution that you can afford to keep up to date. Who knows, perhaps you can replace your whole Cisco setup with Unifi APs for the cost of the additional gear you were looking to purchase.

You don't. That's the problem.

LOL - that was kinda my point. How can one even consider running Cisco gear today without SmartNet? If you can't afford SmartNet, you can't afford to run Cisco. Buy Ubiquiti or MicroTik (or is it Tek?) and get life of the gear updates while saving a ton and likely getting a faster product.

Actually, Cisco lost the court case on this (after they abducted a Canadian). Security fixes are available. You also get free updates for life if you buy a 1RU switch (Catlyst 3K's etc).

Pain in the ass process, but great to know.

Yeah that is really a pain to have to go through. At least you get an update though..
