Elastix has been dead for so long, and FreePBX picked up the space from it. What's even the purpose of Issabel at this point? I appreciate wanting PBX alternatives, but we already have a few. Is another one needed, especially one that is basically just copying FreePBX?
I'm not opposed to it, and maybe I'll give it a try at some point. But it seems like an odd project to have out there splintering the support community even further. Do they add a twist on to the Asterisk + FreePBX space that makes them important in some way? Wazo does some really different stuff from FreePBX. But FreePBX is the definitive Asterisk + FreePBX distro these days, so Issabel has a pretty up hill battle to relevance.
Hopefully someone from Issabel will hop in here and talk about goals and value proposition. I'm certainly interested, but my interest in it is certainly behind FreePBX and Wazo which are established as the leaders.
Yeah, I was trying not to be rude as I know people are trying to make that a go, but it reminds me of the BeOS project, Haiku or whatever. I stopped giving money 10 years ago when I realized it wasnt going to get anywhere like BeOS did. Also Q#$%#$ to Palm for ruining BeOS.

ThanksIssabel is simply some people trying to continue Elastix after PaloSanto Solutions failed and sold to 3CX.
It is certainly not solid yet.

There are not many FOSS solutions out there. Some would argue the only one out there is Wazo and Issabel because of the lack of clarity that FreePBX offers.
The FreePBX GUI may be FOSS, but the rest of the distro most certainly is not.
For all that Sangoma says they are committed to open source, they have not changed any of Schmooze's commercial modules to FOSS.
None of that stops a FreePBX system without commercial modules from working well, but it is most certainly not a fully FOSS solution.
The biggest thing that Elastix included, that users used a lot, was outbound faxing. FreePBX only offers this in a paid commercial module, and I think only with their own carrier SIPStation as the trunk.
Of course you can use an ATA and it will generally work, but that is not the same thing as an integrated solution.
Also, as you so often point out, this is the entire point of FOSS. Protection from a company going out of business. Issabel has taken the project and updated to CentOS 7, and began to stabilize the product. You cannot have this both ways.
All of that said, Issabel is not exactly a FreePBX competitor. It is still the FreePBX GUI on the backend. It is a competitor for the FreePBX distro, but it is not a wholly different solution.
The only wholly different solution that I am aware of in the FOSS space is Wazo (formerly Xivo).

I agree, the question is, is it adding something to the ecosystem that FreePBX is failing to provide? If so, great. Certainly getting away from the commercial add ons would be wonderful.

And that answer is yes, just because it contains all the pieces that Elastix had.

Is Issabel still in Ecuador? I noticed that their feeds are still in Spanish like Elastix was.

The reason that I don't trust issabel yet is because they have not made (that I have found) their code public anywhere yet.
They made a github account but the code is not there.
During early beta, they used to reference an install script on repo.issbel.org but that no longer works.

Oh, good point. I had not looked to see what was on their GitHub.

Surprised you guys never look at FreeSwitch? I know it's aimed more at the carrier voice market but it makes a decent PBX (There are GUI packages). It was designed for multi-tenancy and call centers which are another really nice to have the more advanced feature set.

@john-nicholson freeswitch is a competitor to asterisk, not freepbx. It's gear more towards developers.
There was a project called bluebox that akin to the early Freepbx. It was a GUI for freeswith. But those guys mostly work on another project now that focuses on carrier solutions.
There is Fusion PBX which is still very active, and similar to FreePBX. It is geared towards multiple servers and redundancy rather than a single box deployment

@john-nicholson It has beena few years since I looked at FreeSwitch as a choice for a stand alone PBX and it simply was not there for the layman.
You are right that I have not looked in recent years. I will have to remedy that.

@bigbear I've used the platform for PBX use cases (partially because it was more robust than Asterisk back in the day when I was a VOIP guy). I know a DEV who's done some of the work on the windows builds (Old boss) is why I ask. I know a lot of call center people who've abandoned Asterisk for it.

The open source sipwise distro is actually a Class 5 switch, so not exactly a PBX but more of a carrier solutions.
Its too bad because they have some features that FreePBX doesn't have, and the CPBX is more of a long term service install.
Maybe its time we do a little networking and get somebody like sipwise or Brekeke to release a community FOSS edition, or try to get developers of some of the larger multi-server freeswitch products to release something. I can think of a dozen different people to approach.

Wasn't BeOS 5 the version you can launch from a Windows folder? I had a BeBox as well but a friend never returned it.

BeOs is really cool. It's sad that it didn't make it. It was still pretty influential.
