Servers wouldn't run on custom kernels, but they would rarely have USB either. Maybe that is all that it is, no USB on servers
So no USB keyboard or mouse..... while I get out of band management, this seems drastic.
Been decades since I had a keyboard on a server
So I totally get out of band management, and for people who only work on remote servers, they don't have a physical keyboard attached to the server. They're using SSH to connect to the server (which is providing the keyboard functionality required).
Above Scott mentions servers rarely having USB ports, this statement I think is unfounded, and might be a Scottism. He then goes on and says he doesn't have a keyboard on a server, which while possible doesn't mean that same server doesn't have USB to support a keyboard.

I have remote access to 30 servers. I also have physical access to those same 30 servers when crap really hits the fan. The oldest of those servers is ~6 - 8 years, and the newest is just a year or two old.
All of them have USB ports, and they are enabled. (our KVMs are USB only).

OOB does the same thing, and many enterprise boxes don't even have KVM options but serial ports, instead.

Not a single standard enterprise server on the market has no USB. If you want to get into specialized hardware, then fine, but that is also not the SMB, so be specific.

Sparc systems never had it. If they have them now, that's new. We have stacks of servers that are not all that old and definitely have no USB (or PS2 or any other kind of KVM IO ports.)

HP Integrity traditionally had no KVM IO ports either.

From what I can tell from pics, some more recent RISC servers have added USB ports. I would guess that they are for firmware updates since there is normally no way to attach a monitor to them, having a keyboard or mouse would be pointless. Access traditionally has always been via serial cables, same as switches and routers.

I said KVM options, not that there was no USB.

It might have felt that way, but I was making no such implication. Enterprise systems often don't have KVM options, at all, even though they have USB. We were talking about remote access via USB, so my statement was only in that context and only mentioned the KVM portion, never the USB. I'm not sure why it seemed like I was talking about USB ports in the general sense.
