@jaredbusch It is supported you can either pay for support or run OpenSource.
      https://xcp-ng.com/

It has been super stable compared to Xenserver/Citrix XenServer.

Not looking to take over or diverge too much, but what stability issues did you have on Citrix? We're a 95% Citrix shop and rarely have issues with the hypervisor knock wood Just wondering if we're lucky or if there's something else at play.

I never had any issues with stability when running Xenserver. I quit using it because they kept pulling features out of it, or charging licensing fees for features that were once free.

Why route between VLANs? Just keep the network flat if you are going to route anyway.

Actually now i think about it i don't for this project lol
But we route on our "Core Switch" to allow communication between VLANs so people on VLAN 1 and see the Servers on VLAN 30 (No we can't use flat network, don't ask why that's the way it's been since i started!!! my just the engineer not manager )

e.g. Clients are on 10.120.85.X/24 and we've ran out of address so the servers are on 172.X.X.X/24

People are crazy. So much less human error prone to just expand the scope to a /22 and be done.

Thanks to everyone for the great replies. I just got confirmation from Dell that I need to go with the server version. So it's looking like CentOS 8 Stream / Docker CE / Docker compose will be the setup. Stand by, there will probably be more noob questions coming soon.

Yeah wow that's gross that they force those specifically. Maybe Dell should catch up with everything that's going on in the world.

      Dell did not force that.

I don't get what you mean? They are forcing docker-compose over better containerized alternatives and those specific host versions. The host means nothing, it completely removes the point of a containerized app if I only have specific hosts I can run on.

While what you say here is true, most developers don't set up the containers properly. Leading to being locked into certain underlying distributions. In my experience with Docker, it's portability is mostly hype because of that issue.

I've never had that happen. Can you point me to an example? How would the containerized app even know what system it's running on? It's namespaced in the kernel. I'd love to see a real world example of this.

The only thing I can think of is you tried to run an x86 container on an arm system. The system architecture type should be the only thing that has an affect here

It's been months since I've tried, because I gave up on using the docker deployment method for open source projects.

I know, it makes no sense, but it's what I've run into way more often than not. I think @scottalanmiller has mentioned having these same issues with Docker.

Wondering (think i know the answer)
Does the EdgeRouter 24/48 (ES-24-LITE) do InterVLAN routing?

Setting up a Dev/Test Lab with an Old SAN and few servers, so was going to separate the iSCSI/Management traffic etc

It does. If you're only doing routing, it should do so at full line speed, but I've never had a need for a 24/48 port router, so I've never actually used those models myself.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Another stupid question: Should I be installing the workstation version of the OS instead of server?

      Just stick with server.

If you do end up needing additional things that are included with the workstation, they can all be added latter. That is another one of those huge if things, very rarely would they be needed.

I'll try to confirm that with Dell. They are slow on the replies.

Keep in mind that these are not different versions as Microsoft treats different versions of things. All they are is a different set of applications/programs installed by default.

No, we're not switching everything over from Windows... we only need a single VM... to run a single Cyber Recovery application from Dell to manage our fancy new systems. I know, I don't want to hear it, all those decisions were made while I was either still in the hospital, or during the 8 following months when I wanted to die because I couldn't walk. Definitely not looking for a critique of the design or components.

That being said, here are the requirements Dell sent over:

The management host is a physical or VM host. existing hyper-v host

The management host requires the following:

      ● One of the following operating systems with the latest updates, patches, and security patches:
      ○ CentOS Linux 7.6, 7.7, 7.8, 7.9, and Stream 8
      ○ Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 7.6, 7.7, 7.8, 7.9, and 8.x
      ○ SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Version 12 SP5

      ● 4 GB RAM
      ● 200 GB disk space:
      ○ 1.5 GB free space to extract the Cyber Recovery software
      ○ 10 GB or more free space for installation of the Cyber Recovery software
      no problem

The following Docker components are required to install Cyber Recovery software:

      ● Docker Version 17.06.0, 18.09.7, 19.03.5, 19.03.8, 19.03.12, 19.03.13, 20.10.2, and 20.10.6
NOTE: Red Hat Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server only support Docker Enterprise Edition (EE). CentOS Linux also
      supports Docker Community Edition (CE).

      ● Docker Compose Version 1.21, 1.24, 1.25.3,1.25.4, 1.26.2, 1.27.4, and 1.29.1

      So my main questions are:
      Which OS should I choose?

With those options and limitations, I'd use CentOS Stream 8.

Where does Docker go in all this? Pre OS? Post OS?

It's an application you install, so post OS.

      Same question for Docker Compose?

Docker Compose gets installed after Docker. Whichever OS you choose, you should be able to use the Docker and Docker Compose included in the standard repository, but double check the version for yourself.

@rojoloco you install OS. Then you install Docker. Then you install the app inside docker.

That last step is basically a one line magic command if the developers created a proper docker install.

That's always a huge if in my experience.

Anyone used AmBit POS? It looks awful, but someone is recommending it.

Could be ran on IPads, Other than that I haven't heard much - It's not very popular in the Midwest that I can tell.

No public pricing or info. VERY clear that the vendor doesn't think much of the product.

I didn't look on the website, but does it say you can request a demo?

also - a lot of POS vendors dont put there price in a public setting because then their competitors will be able to potentially steal their business by saying "their systems are X amount and can do x,y,andz . we can do ours for Y amount. and ours do A,B,C as well as X,Y,Z" so not actually unheard of.

That's why you demo both.... and once you get prices from Company A and Company B, you start the haggling process yourself.

which is what a lot of people do .

It is what a lot of people do, and as we've discussed so many times in the past, people do all sorts of crazy things. Just for starters, not having publicly available pricing tells me that person/company does not value my time, and it will cost me extra time to negotiate with them.
