Have you considered a more modern syncing alternative? DropBox, ownCloud, NextCloud, Box, or any number of similar services? I think that most of these handle these scenarios more elegantly. I know that this is a big change rather than a "fix", but maybe it is worth considering?

Patching on Linux tends to be very different from that on Windows. As individual packages can be rolled back easily the idea of a system restore is uncommon. Look at CentOS with RPM, RPM alone generally handles everything that you need without an additional tool. Windows doesn't really do that with their patches.

Why not start with something really basic, like a simple website. Maybe make a DokuWiki site that you can host at home and use that to document your network as you go. Give yourself a real reason to be using the system right from the beginning.

OStatic reports that Intel and Samsung are Committed to the Google Chromebook platform. It makes sense as the Chromebook is a large market for Samsung making mid-range CB laptops and Intel sees it as a place where it can keep selling processors even as the old PC market begins to fade.

The rumor is is that Windows 9 pricing is going to be extremely low and that the Metro interface is going to be removed (I assume optionally) on at least the Enterprise edition of the OS. I assume that Enterprise will be volume license only, like it is now, and the lack of the crippled interface will be used as a selling point to convince companies to upgrade to volume licensing.
