Everyone always blames not knowing Linux for not knowing computing basics. This thread he says he's all confused because it is Linux, but he obviously doesn't understand the Windows terms he's trying to use or just things like what a network is. He's literally mixing concepts like AD Domains and access points thinking that they are related. Understanding Windows at all would make Linux clear to him here.

Wow. I read what he posted. He doesn't even seem to know what he wants/needs to do with the Raspberry Pis.

I love fishing. In fact, when I fish I use as little technology as possible. No fish finder, gps, or even a motor. I just like to get out and relax. Oh and alcohol and kayaking go hand in hand.

I have always thought Kayaking would be fun/cool to do. Any suggestions for someone that has never done it before?

Target shooting is a great stress reliever. Somes plinking with the .22 will do it, and some days you need the 12 gauge and some clay pigeons.

When I worked at the prison I could fire the .357 Magnum Revolvers that were standard issue at the time. Department of Corrections fire .38 Special out of them. I bought the .357 Magnum rounds on occasion to target shoot with. That was cool.

I like going to the firing range. When I worked at the prison you could go practice whenever you wanted. So that is what I will do. It is my "alone" time so to speak. I have a little .22 pistol, .22 ammo is cheap, I use it to go plinking.

Plinking? You mean the sound the bullet makes when it bounces off a beer can / glass bottle? lol.

My uncle used to have a little 6 shooter .22. I'd love to get my hands on one again.

Yup. I have metal targets I shoot at now that get knocked down when I hit them.

That is awesome for countries and places that don't have a reliable addressing scheme. In developed countries with a reliable addressing scheme, I wouldn't see a benefit in going to it.

Looks like System 76 is creating their own Linux OS based on Ubuntu of course. Has anyone seen/played with this yet?

    • RE: SW rant time

@jaredbusch A person in the State of Missouri filed a pro se case against Wal-Mart and ask for 4 Trillion dollars because they made Twinkies so cheap to buy, how could they help but not get fat. He filed his case, i.e. asked for that...and it was promptly thrown out. So I find your statement to be a little bit ridiculous in nature. Most of the time in extradition cases (even between states in the US) the crime has to be serious enough to warrant the time and cost of transporting the offender. Also what a US citizen can be extradited to a foreign country is covered in the Extradition treaty with that nation. So you could conceivably commit a crime in a country and if you get back to the US not be able to be extradited if the treaty doesn't cover that crime.

@penguinwrangler Why are you ripping out what is in place, isn't he licensed for it all currently?

I get his budget is being cut, but that doesn't effect what the school district already has deployed.

His renewal is coming up soon, that is why we are replacing it.

      Ah.

As to the next question, why aren't you implementing NethServer and Samba 4 from there?

Because Samba 4 domain on a CentOS server without all the extra NethServer stuff is slimmer and runs bettter. Also it is just as easy to administer.

My friend who is a tech director for my kids school is having his budget slashed by a superintendent who doesn't think that much of technology. About 750 kids in the district (rural area) he has about 400-500 machines to manage. His budget is $20,000 for the year. So we are moving him to all open source. Moving from Novell eDirectory to a Samba 4 domain. Doing anything and everything to save him money.

In all seriousness, $20K may or may not be enough for this particular year - we really don't know. One thing we do know, that would be enough to replace only about 20 PCs (30 if you scrimp), so let's hope for his sake that he doesn't need to replace much equipment.

I volunteer and help him. It is not enough money. All of his machines are old, some are 10+ years old. He prays they last because all he can do is repair what breaks.

So that means he quit right? $20K won't even cover his salary, so I'm guessing that means he's looking for a new job.

Not including his salary of course. All he has is $20,000 to cover any repairs or new purchases.

In line with this topic does SAMBA have some kind of tie in with GPO, where you can create / edit / delete GPO's from within SAMBA?

Tie in? Samba does GPO exactly like any other AD does.

So there is a Group Policy Editor that operates on CentOS or something? (no windows involved)

When you create a Samba 4 (SAMBA 4 is the key) domain, you can use the exact same tools to administer it that you would any Windows Domain controller. The caveat is it must be a Samba 4 Domain which is at a Windows 2008 functional level. You can open up RSAT on your Windows box and create new users, open up Group Policy and start pushing out GPOs. It is not hard at all, many many how-tos on how to do this. Here is one of the first links from Google.

@nashbrydges Someone can be extradited only if they have broken the law in that country. If I hack into servers in Thailand, I am committing a crime in Thailand and can then be legally extradited from the US to Thailand because we do have an extradition treaty with Thailand. If I post on ML and insult their King, which is a crime in Thailand, I cannot be extradited to Thailand.
