Of course now the Department of Education (which I'm not sure what authority they would have here) is saying they are under no obligation to respect the federal loan forgiveness program. Hopefully that will be ironed out by the time you need it.

In America, the government is under no obligation to anything.

It is a gamble that they won't end it before 10 years. I am still willing to take that gamble. The job still has better pay and retirement so it is still a win if they don't.

Sort of, but interest is part of the overall system and cost. Because we are talking about people pre-career and pre-adult, the interest is part of their cost, not an option.

Sure, but then @Jimmy9008 needs to include the interest costs on his education as well, assuming he has them, currently we don't know.

Oh sure, needs to be apples to apples, of course.

Indeed. I'm pretty sure its 1.25% APR. So, I believe £18k left unpaid in any way for the year would gain £225. (I think).

I am sure though that currently students in the UK have it far worse than I. The prices have rocketed upwards.

I have 85,315 in total loans. The interest rate is 4.875%.
      30 year payment plan:
Monthly Payment: 451.49 Total Principal Paid: $85,315 Total Interest Paid: $77,222.84 Total: 162,537.84
      20 year payment plan:
Monthly Payment: 557.17 Total Principal Paid: $85,315 Total Interest Paid: $48,405.01 Total: 133,720.01
      10 year Payment plan:
Monthly Payment: 899.69 Total Principal Paid: $85,315 Total Interest Paid: $22,648.31 Total: 107,963.31

That's a year or two at a pretty good salary just lost to loans 😞

Not now that I get the forgiveness, that is why I couldn't pass the job up.

How long do you have to stay to earn the foregiveness in full?

10 years but I am planning on retiring from the Federal Government, so that is 25 years. The retirement is really good as well.

So it could be calculated to be a $10,800 annual bonus in that regard.

It depends, I have to do a IBR (Income based repayment plan) during the ten years. So right now with 4 children in the house that gets me to 81.00 a month as my lowest possible payment. This will fluctuate some over the years but not too much so if my payments average out to 100 a month that is 1200 a year X 10 years for 12,000 paid. I still have child support for 7 years so I would have to have done the 30 year plan just to make ends meet. So I would have paid 162,537.84, I will pay about 12,000 so 162,537.84 - 12,000 is 150537.84 divided over ten years is more like 15,000 annual bonus.

@DustinB3403 I calculated my savings wrong. Yes, I will have 70,000 to 75,000 forgiven. I also don't have to pay interest on that so my savings are more in the $140,000 area. Just for the record, yes I am poking the bear, and having a lot of fun while I do it.

Mobile payments aren't a new thing. They've been around a few years and it seems like now everyone has their own mobile payment platform. I think the three strongest players in this game are Apply Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay. There's also Paypal and the like, but I'm talking mostly about storing credit card info in your phone and paying through an NFC terminal.

I've always wanted to try these (Android Pay) but for some reason have been reluctant. The more I've read lately, it seems that in reality these can be more secure than regular credit card payments using the new chip reader.

My question to you all is have you used before or do you currently use some form of mobile payment solution? If so, which one and why? What has been your experiences? What needs to be improved? Do you find that mobile payments are more secure than regular credit card transaction at a chip or swipe terminal?

Do not forget that Walmart is setting up their own thing. That will be huge also.

How will it be huge? Will it only be usable at Wal-Mart stores? What benefits might it bring from using their mobile payment platform outside of a Wal-Mart store?

Do you realize how many people shop in walmart every day?

It never has to work outside of Walmart to be huge.

@JaredBusch is right. Take this into consideration:
Total amount of money spent at Wal-Mart every hour of every day $36,750,000 (source:http://www.statisticbrain.com/wal-mart-company-statistics/)

That is on the hour. That is roughly 880 Million in one day. Walmart wouldn't need much to meet or exceed Apple in money or transactions. Especially if Wal-Mart opens it up to other smaller retailers. Gross sales in the App Store was $30 Billion in 2016 (Source:https://www.forbes.com/sites/chuckjones/2017/01/06/apples-app-store-generating-meaningful-revenue/#4a4147531eb6). Apple doesn't disclose details about Apple pay transaction, at least I couldn't find it quickly. However, it is plain to see Wal-Mart could easily become the dominant player in the market quickly.

I was reading the posts about the All-Access for StarGate yesterday and people were complaining about how bad the streaming was.

Damn - just get with someone who knows WTF they are doing and let them offer your shit for you.

I saw posts about this in reference to last night but it has sucked from the beginning for me. I thought it was just me. One night it would go from the commercial (I went with the cheaper access) back to the show and you could hear it but the screen was black. You also have to remember to cast the app before you play the show because if you play the show and then cast it always has problems.

Just one more reason I dislike Chromecast.

Eh, I've found that some apps work amazingly with it and some suck. Looks like the implementation is the problem and not the actual device or technology. I actually prefer the Chromecast over my fireTV or the Roku Stick.

I've not used any of the stick versions of those things, the normal Fire and Roku are pretty awesome in my experience. Biggest issue I have is the HDMI sync issue - the fraking security shit to make sure you're not stealing the stream... sadly it causes issue sometimes with my AV receiver and TV.

As for Chromecast - I want a real remote, dislike using the phone/pc/tablet to manage the stream on my TV.

I love my Chromecast, CBS All access is the only program I have trouble casting with.

I finally took control of the tv last night and watched 1/3 of star trek beyond, first tv ive watched in weeks, but then lost control of tv to the kids and wife. Went back to my cave after that:(

See if the Wife and Kids did that to me (although one of my kids is a big Sci-Fi nut like me so he is on my side) did that, the internet would mysteriously stop working till they got interested in something else and once that happened the internet would quietly start working and I would be in watching Star Trek Beyond again.

Although the CBS All Access SUCKS. I mean if you wanted to make a streaming platform that just doesn't work that is what you would make. It kept starting and stopping, going back to the beginning, jumping back a couple of seconds, replay a second over and over again, popping sounds throughout. I mean it was just as bad as it could be. Took me an hour and a half to watch it. It isn't an hour and a half long. I am all Andriod and was casting to my chromecast. My friend is all apple and has apple tv and was watching through the CBS app on his apple tv had the same issues. I don't believe it was on our end. My bandwidth wasn't even being touched during the whole thing. I was at maybe 30 Mbps down and I get 130 down usually.

It's odd because, for Linux, being on a domain doesn't make sharing files between them easier. For the use case listed it would add near zero benefit.

is that true? If a Linux box is part of a domain, it's not easier to map a SMB share? i.e. don't need to provide credentials when making the connection?

You'd still have provide credentials. It makes no part of the mapping easier, at least to my knowledge.

As long as there is SSH enabled, you have sftp between the Pis themselves and you can do that on Windows Boxes with something like Filezilla. Don't even need to map or "setup" shares.
