I do all my virtualization with Xen or KVM so I hope they bring out some bigger chips that are still lower cost than Intel.

Hypervisor is not a factor. It's Windows that has the licensing. Hyper-V and VMware have no core limits or licensing either. But any Windows on top, that's what gets you.

So if you are 100% Linux, then you don't have to worry about this.

You are correct, I wasn't clear. I do KVM and Xen and all my servers I have virtualized are a Linux distro of some flavor. I hope that AMD doesn't hold back making bigger chips than 8 cores because of the Windows Licensing sweet spot is what I was trying to infer. Need more coffee....

I am really exited about this. I have always liked AMD and was starting to worry about them. Not that they couldn't compete but the management at AMD seemed to to be fumbling there for a while. Looks like that is resolved now. I have always enjoyed the performance AMD chips gave when compared to cost, even before Ryzen. Most people are not gamers or Engineers. So I could build a whitebox with AMD motherboard and chip at a good price.

@alefattorini Oh I plan on it. I always like trying out new distros. Especially one that could be used in a small business environment.

@scottalanmiller I suggest giving it a spin. It has a very active community. I have never posted anything in their forums and not received an answer within a 24 hour period.

Has anyone ever used SME Sever? http://wiki.contribs.org? Looks similar to NethServer, not as up to date of an interface it appears but I have used it at locations and it works well. It is based on CentOS.

    • RE: Goodbye 3DTV

I hate 3D movies. Would never do 3D at home. I always have a headache after a 3D movie. I only go when it is the only movie time that works for me, and often then I won't go unless it is a movie I just absolutely want to see. One of my many issues about 3D are the glasses. I already wear glasses so I can make out the TV with out it being one huge mass of blob images, blob images in 3D still not that appealing so I have to wear two sets of glasses. Add 3D glasses with regular glasses and the excess weight starts to hurt after awhile and I am convinced this is one of the causes of my headaches. I don't know why theaters don't offer clip on 3D movie glasses for the people with glasses. Still it is just a gimmick. The only movie that I thought 3D actually added something to it was Marvel's Dr. Strange, and it wasn't a must have thing for the movie.

@travisdh1 Scarlett Johansson wearing such tight outfits that she is pretty much naked. Do you need any other reason to see this movie? I find her very attractive.

    • RE: Data centers and retrofitting

There is a building here in St. Louis that was retrofitted for a data center. I got to take a tour of it. I worked at the building as a summer intern back in the 90s so I knew about the building. The building has 4 floors but was designed originally so that it could have held 10 floors and the TV antenna tower for the NBC affiliate here in St. Louis. Before that it was owned by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and held heavy huge printing machines on the fourth floor, as an example of how stout the building was. So structurally this thing was a beast. They were able to add what they needed and really made it into something.

    • RE: XP Mode on Windows 10

I support a metal fabrication shop. They have machines that run on XP, Windows 2000 that do all sorts of metal work. Punching, bending, welding, etc. They were taking designs from a Workstation in the office then walking them to the metal working machine and using a USB drive to transfer all the different types of designs they would make. It was so old it couldn't work with Window shares on the new computers in the office. I was able to get it to work with a Samba share from a CentOS linux server though. They were very please with that.

I have a script I run that will remove them. Then I do the upgrade and add them back in via a script. I run a Ubuntu Server for the exact same reason you do. For a Unifi Controller

    • RE: Always Teach to the Future

@MattSpeller @dafyre I do have a degree. It is only so I can get an interview. Please don't take this as me being harsh either but there are other ways to learn IT and get skills other than a four year university. With the over inflated cost of a four year university I just don't see the value, don't even mention being a well rounded individual, I can become well rounded on my own and don't need that spoon fed to me either. I have used absolutely 0% of what was taught to me at school in my career in IT. Maybe the program I was in was absolute crap and has tainted my view, but this is just my opinion on going to a four year school for an IT career.

    • RE: Always Teach to the Future

My kids are amazed at the fact that I can just "figure out" stuff. I tell them that the most important thing they can learn is how to learn by yourself. You must develop logic skills, organization and reading skills. That will allow you to learn on your own and not be spoon fed. For tech people I think college is a waste of time.

    • RE: Always Teach to the Future

@scottalanmiller I was a tech director at a K-12 school in rural northeast Missouri (2007-2009). The tech level of teachers was so pitiful that it is painful to talk about. You have teachers that have no idea how to use technology and they are teaching kids that will be graduating high school in the 2020s. They are literally teaching them the same way as I was taught back in the 1970/80/90s. Getting away with it because they are not "good" with technology. These people would be fired in a business setting because they couldn't find the print button.

    • RE: Stop Calling it Linux, But What to Call It

@thwr I go along with this thinking to. I would call them by the OS name and reference the family it belongs to. In referring to what to call them in general I think we refer to it by the family name. I am going to learn Redhat family OS, or Debian based OS, etc. Learning Redhat family you have Redhat, Fedora, CentOS, etc.
