RE: External Drive online but not recognized
We dont officially support them but charge for the time they bother us! They didnt want a full service with us. If they did they wouldnt have been in this mess in the first instance and they certainly wouldnt be allowed to unplug or touch servers/hardware without our say so!!!!
But you are correct! The dangerous people are those who THINK they know how things work and go gung-ho with the troubleshooting!
They have been charged accordingly for our time -
Sharepoint with Office 365 + checking in / out files
Hi guys
I'm trying to move a folder from one location to another within a sharepoint site. However trying to do so I get an error that says 1 file checked out so unable to move....I navigate to that folder, check it in, and then re-try only to be told 1 more file is checked out....This process has been going on and and on and I can see many checked out files...How and is it possible to view ALL checked out files, regardless of where they are and check them all in at the same time?
Note, i am used office 365 sharepoint.Thanks

RE: Windows 7 share - accessed from windows 10
OK this is now working.
The user account I was logged into the Windows 10 PC with didn't exist on the host server.
Once i created the same user and password on the Windows 7 PC it was working!!! -
RE: We couldn't complete the updates Undoing Changes Do not turn off your computer
I'm a fan of leaving these kind of things as long as possible as they would eventually catch themselves up and return to the previous state. Otherwise if thats no option, you can try logging in under safe mode to find out what update failed then try and push it out manually.

Installing FS on a DC
We're looking to replace a server for a client and deciding whether to put the DC and FS on a single VM (which is what they have had for the last 6 years). I've always been in favour for splitting the two but wanted to know your thoughts.
The new server spec: Xeon 2620 2.10Ghz - 24GB Ram
They have 15 users (with roaming profiles).
Can you let me know if adding the two together are a big no-no or what the reasons are for not doing this. I understand converting a VM to a DC has a slight effect on write cache so could affect performance but in practice is this a huge downside? Trying to weigh up differences, pro's and con's

Active Directory Migration
I've just left a new potential client...Their setup consists of 10 users with 1 old SBS 2003 server (domain controller) which is creaking and about to die on them.
Whoever was looking after their network previously talked them into buying a new server (Server2012R2) which they agreed and was installed prior to him walking away!!
However, the problem is, rather than migrating the AD from the old server to the new or even start fresh, he simply joined the new server to the original domain and moved their data across from the old to the new.
What I'd like to do if I get the gig is promote the new server to be the primary domain controller and then migrate the AD information across and then shut down the old server. Is there any easy way of promoting the new server to a primary DC and migrate the AD without loosing any data?
I've never migrated AD across before - i usually start fresh so thoughts welcomed.

RE: Authenticating to Azure Storage Account on Local Windows PC
So I figured out how to do it.
It is possible to map a local shared drive to a Storage account in azure using the net use command in powershell. There is an access key generated within azure which is needed when processing the command.I just need to play around now with permissions and GPO to see if I can get multiple connections working

Advice for new office setup
So I have a small project coming up and I was wondering how you'd configure the networks infrastructure...
Here's the brief:
5x individual businesses (approx 15-20 staff each) are set to move into a shared office space.
We're providing a 1GB bearer managed pipe with a 100/100 failover (internet connectivity is a must here) to the office, and the objective is to keep each business segregated and invisible to each other on the LAN, yet share this same pipe.
I was thinking of using a Draytek 2860n inside our LAN as our firewall/router to control and create VLANs using each one of the ports (there are 6) to each individual office.
Each port will be connected to its own dedicated switch to then provide connectivity to the devices in each office.
Is this at all best practice or the appropriate way you'd configure this network?
Your thoughts and advise are appreciated

Basic Folder Permissions
Hi Team
I'm possibly having a mid week brain meltdown but need some assistance please to ensure im doing this correctly.
We have a Windows File Server which stores a Access database in a directory called: Folder A/Database/[Access File sits here] (as shown further below too).
We then have another directory: Folder B/Main/[Excel File sits here], This excel file references the Access database in FolderA.
.
Managers need access to both Folder locations but Standard Users just need access to the Excel File in Folder B.
However, because the Excel file references the Access database in folder A. Users need read access to that Access file in order to use the Excel properly. However we dont want users having full access to that Database file. IE- We dont want them to be able to copy it.I hope thats making sense so far.
Folder A > Database > Access File
Folder B > Main > Excel FileI have given the ManagersGroup Full access to both Folder A & B - they can work no problem,
I have then given a UsersGroup Full access to Folder B but just Read Only permissions on the Database folder within Folder A. The system works well, Users can use the Excel and all is ok.However, if the users were to browse the UNC path \servername\FolderA\Database (although this path is hidden in the Excel), they can then be able to copy the actual access database which we dont want them to be able to do.
Therefore the Q I had is:
a) Whats the best way to provide permissions to usersgroup that allows them to use the Excel file but at the same time be able to access the Access database, but not allow them to copy it? I understand if they have read rights, they can copy to their local computers and this is what we want to avoid.
b) Can I use GPO to hide specific locations entirely but keep permissions?
c) any other ideas im grateful.
I am about to look at advanced permissions such as Transverse Folder/Execute file - is that going down the right path?
Thoughts appreciated and apologies if this is basic but I've been thinking too long and have mind blank. -
Sharing folders with External users
Current solution: We're using SharePoint online and have certain files/folders shared with external users (as well as use for internal users of course)
We hate this solution as SharePoint mapped as a drive causes problems occasionally and we've massively exceeded our file limitations and have to keep creating new document libraries and so forth.
New proposed plan: Spin up a Virtual File server (and DC) and have all SharePoint folders stored on the server with permissions on specific folders.
I was thinking of (using CradlePoint VPN (formerly Pertino) to give the external users access but explaining how to download/install it to random external people could be problematic...Therefore what do others use as an external file sharing facility from a Windows server?
We dont want to use Dropbox as this is unreliable and if the sync tool stops working and we dont know about it, we could leave ourselves exposed to problems. -
Room Calendar Permissions on Office 365 Exchange
Hi Team
I've just migrated a new client over to O365.They have 6 room mailboxes used for calendars to book rooms in their office. All staff had full permission to each one and could see what bookings were in place and could add/edit them.
Post migration, all rooms have been created however no user can view the details or add/remove/edit bookings. They only see a 'busy' option.
Can anyone please let me know the PS script or where in the GUI i can find the options to 'Allow all users full permission to these room mailboxes as a default' ?
Much appreciated

Edgemax Site-To-Site VPN + NAT
Wonder if you guys can help me. I'm using a Edgemax pro ER8 and I have configured a site to site vpn which is working well.
However I am told that the other end will only accept traffic originating from 10.2.1.8/29.
Our local network is on 192.168.40.0/24 (using eth 4)I'm told to NAT 10.2.1.9/29 to the server. How do I go about setting this up this NAT rule, ideally via GUI?
Any ideas how I can do this pls? I need this working by deadline today -
RE: Forcing Group Policy
So all is now working guys.....I realised I kept applying GPO's again and again, deleting them and re-applying the same things to get it to work. Where I should have taken a step back and instead of re-creating and re-applying I should have modified the GPO to remove the existing configuration - applied it so it was all clear and then re-applied if that makes sense.
Thanks for your help

RE: HyperVServer Build
@black3dynamite said in HyperVServer Build:
I saw this earlier but skimmed over it. Having just re-read it, this was key to do on my Windows 10 client.
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Credentials Delegation > Allow delegating fresh credentials with NTLM-only server authentication
Click Enable and add wsman/fqdn-of-hyper-v-host.I'm going to format and start from scratch as previously I had enabled so many firewall rules and bits so want to start clean and see what I need to enable exactly.
Thanks I'll report back
