      Hi folks,

I've been looking at VXRail, have any of you had experience of them? How would you rate them?

From what I can see it seems DAS storage is shared on the box to local compute nodes. Sort of how the Vrtx ran. Am I right? In this case, it's not really HC and defo not HA, right?

Wouldn't a better option be a starwind vsan appliance or Vmware vsan on top of some r740xd?

    • ASA/N4000 routing...

      Hi folks,

I have an ASA and Dell N4000 switch.

ASA is 10.12.0.1/24. vLAN 5 on the N4000 is 10.12.0.2/24. Clients on vLAN 5 can route to the Internet perfectly.

vLAN 6 is 10.12.10.2/24. I have enabled routing between vLANs and clients on either can ping clients on the other vLAN.

My problem... vLAN 6 clients cannot get to the Internet.

      How can I resolve that?

I have tried adding these two static routes, but no dice.

      static route 10.12.10.0 255.255.255.0 10.12.0.2 (the vLAN 5 interface).
      static route 10.12.10.0 255.255.255.0 10.12.0.1 (the ASA)

      Any other ideas?

      Best,
      Jim

      Hi folks,

I have Windows Server Datacenter 2019 licenses. If I install Hyper-V server, rather than Windows Server with the role, can I setup AVMA and have the host auto license the VMs?

Or, do I need to login to each VM and add the Datacenter key?

      Best,
      Jim

Avma does not work on Hyper-V Server.

You'll need to install Hyper-V role on Windows Server DC if that is a must have among any other DC only features.

So, if I have the Hyper-V Server installed only - how do I use my Datacenter license on the VMs? I guess I login to each and enter the key manually?

Also, you can use 50 activations or something like that. Afterwards you have to contact Ms support to get more, but it doesn't cost money to do that.

I guess I would activate one VM, sysprep it, then reuse... it should stay activated right?

I have had a look online but cant see much information about supported drives. Does anybody have any knowledge of these? Do the drives have to be IBM brand or can we throw anything in these?

    • Wireless headset for Skype for Business...

      Hi folks,

I need a wireless headset that works with Skype for Business fully. Bluetooth or USB WIFi dongle, or both.

Currently, we have a Logitech H800. This device is not fully supported for Skype for Business.

When away from the desk, the headset will ring if somebody calls in, but you are not able to answer the call from the headset. So, you have to run back to the desk and answer the call in Skype for Business soft phone, which then connects the call and works over the wireless headset.

Running back to the desk each time is not the solution and wont work for this particular user. What devices do you use for this? The H800 is fine other than not being able to answer a call wirelessly or hang-up.

      Best,

      Jim

You already have access to that. . . do you mean with the management console and not using PowerShell to administer it?

Yeah, that was what the version was given to spiceworks users way back when... would be good to get that again.

Didn't they offer a full version of the middle tier for Hyper-V to Spiceworks users once?

Yes, but you'd have to check with them to see if they are still honoring that. It was also offered to ML users IIRC.

Ill keep looking in to it then 🙂

      Hi folks,

Do Starwind still offer the free version like before, where you can build vSAN on unlimited nodes and scale out? Any URL for that? All I seem to find online now is 2 node max...

    • Dell N3000 VLAN

      Hi folks,

I have a Dell switch with VLAN4. Under IP on the UI, this VLAN4 has no IP addressing set. Interface 2 - 10 is set to be access mode, PVID 4.

A second Dell switch also has VLAN4, which is set to be 172.16.x.x network. The interfaces are set access mode 1 - 48 PVID 4. Interface 1 connects to an ASA 172.16.0.1.

If I connect the first switch interface 2 to the second switch, should they act as one VLAN? (Like, if I connected two layer 2 switch).

      Hi folks,

I have a few switch stacks here. vLAN1/default is set to have a gateway of 172.16.0.1, which is an ASA. The box has some site-to-site VPNs setup.

From the default LAN/vLAN1, I can ping/communicate with devices on the other end of the VPN.

Interface 5 of the ASA is vLAN10, this is 10.4.0.1. Any device on that network is unable to communicate over the VPN, but the ASA is set to allow this traffic from 10.4.x.x as far as I can see...

Could it be a vLAN issue? If vLAN10 traffic is going over the VPN, does the other end need to also be set for vLAN10 to allow that on the remote LAN? Or, as its routed, would the vLAN information in the traffic be irreverent from the 10.4.0.1 gateway out?

      Best,
      Jim

Does the other side of the VPN know how to get back to 10.4.0.0?

I'll have a look. So, the other end is 10.2.0.1, do I need to add a route in that ASA to say 10.4.x.x -> route out 10.2.x.x?

In terms of VMs, from memory (im at home) the blades run around 380 VMs. The storage side (aka 170TB number) comes from another team, so I have to just go based on that.

So... could be anything. No retention or recovery details? RTO? RPO?

Retention: 20 days, daily incremental. RTO, RPO - nope.

So, I just need something for 15k or less that will get me to 2020.

Downside... there is no answer we can give (or you can give) that will tell you if this is the case.

Upside... you are given no goals or requirements. So ANYTHING you give is an answer.
