We noticed that the employee that left the company 6 months ago still has an active auto-reply. what is the best practice and how long should auto-reply for terminated employees?

We send email bound for "dead" accounts to someone else so that we can respond. So for us, the duration is "zero".

We know this is a domain, we don't know that the user is using a Windows PC. @AshKetchum is this a Windows PC? Also why the need to do so discreetly?

You can do as Travis/Jared said or use something like scp to do this.

So our Dish network is down and not sure when it will go back. We are outside US, our TV system diagram is like this --- DISH > Encoder (HDMI to IP) > Enseo System/IP network > STB > TV. SInce our source channel Dish is down, can i use roku as source channel? is there a roku channel that continuously going to play movies?

We cut the cord over a decade ago.

      Just drop it.

Cache a set of Blu-Ray movies and series that are worth watching.

      Put the money saved away.

      Take a vacation with it.

@Grey said in How to monitor switch ports via The Dude Monitoring?:

OP wants to see what ports are going offline. My Ubiquiti system tells me that. It is a Software Defined Network (SDN). Do you see where I'm going with this? Did you look at the mp4 that I linked?

Ah, but it's that it is Ubiquiti, not SDN, that does that. It's that he would want a monitored system like Ubiquiti. ZeroTier is a more traditional SDN and would not in any way do what he wants. SDN is a red herring here. It's Ubiquiti itself that is what matters.

I suppose that's true. There are different levels of a software defined network and a ZeroTier or Silver Peak would be at a level that's too high to see ports, while a smaller Ubiquiti system definitely looks at ports. I think Meraki hardware & software shows the same thing, and I know they really defined the SDN space for site management. By definition, however, they're all SDNs. The days of using a command line to add a switch, define a vlan, or extend your footprint in to a new building are done, except for troubleshooting.

Is RDP viable practice for LAN remote session? I know RDP is a big NO over internet, but is it a good security practice to use RDP in LAN? Jumping from one server to another using RDP is quick and easy.

Curious - What OS are you going to use this for?

This is for use on the LAN. Really any reasonable use case is just fine.

Yap, hopefully, I only need to get 1 license. As if I need to buy more, I might just need to use one of my physical workstations here instead of VM.

Using a physical workstation for remote Windows 10 is almost always better than trying to go down the VDI route. VDI licensing is draconian and onerous and it's only really useful in special circumstances.

If you can avoid Windows, the VDI is easy.

But if it didn't workout, i guest you will be stuck with Ubiquity and get higher models?

If what does not work out? If that model does not have what you are looking for?

Exactly. You do not buy something that will not work.

If you cannot determine from spec sheets, then you buy a single unit and test.

That's one of the great things about Ubiquiti, it's cheap to field test. Cheaper than looking into more expensive units more thoroughly.

And honestly for a 30 unit deployment, I would contact vendors for demo units if it was that important to your business.

While it is O365, the Business OWNS the email and Domain. They are allowed to do as they please.

Instead of deleting, you may want to have it forwarded to HR or some other party.

I'm with Scott - stop having in person meetings with that person. Do it all through email. At the very least, write up a detailed email after the conversation, and have him agree to it through email before presenting it to the boss.

Then send the email chain to the boss on the way to the meeting.

      Nothing beats a paper trail.

If you have Azure AD Connect in place, when you log in to o365 it will tell you "Synced with Active Directory" in the Sync column of your User list.

The situation that you are facing here is that you are being forced to act as a Project Manager (PM) and you need to step into that role mentally and work as one in the context of addressing the scheduling.

If you're looking at who holds the FSMO roles you can use this powershell command.

      Get-ADDomain | Select-Object InfrastructureMaster, RIDMaster, PDCEmulator

I don't get why people insist on only using PowerShell to query things that can be more quickly queried with something like this:

      netdom query fsmo

      Am I missing something?

Because Powershell is kind of where Windows management is moving. I get that it could be done another way but the future of Windows Server is powershell.

I'm still unsure why companies will no longer issue certs for .local domains. It seems to me that complicates things for those of us who are stuck with them for a while longer.

What I've heard some folks wanting to do is make their internal domains something like int.mydomain.com, which isn't really all that terrible... but it can complicate things if you want to use an external web host that expects some level of control over DNS.

Since they don't work on the internet, why do you need a CA to issue it? Stand up your own internal CA, publish the root via GP to your clients and go to town.

@scottalanmiller we have s scheduled backup than supposed to save on Drive E but it failed since drive E is missing. we dont know if its an external drive, map drive or local drive that suddenly disappears. is there a log that we can see it? we have the backup log that shows the drive gone missing 10 days ago.

Maybe it was a removable drive that has been removed.
