Email interfaces

My needs are simple for an email client - email (with folders) contacts and calendars. I don't use OneNote yet so that integration isn't something I've tried.

I reckon I'll be the odd duck here... I actually really love GMail's interface. I don't have to reach over and grab my mouse to do anything unless I want to.... I can search, tag, label... everything I need right from the keyboard. It does integrate with its own calendar at least...
If I can't use GMail then I want Outlook (and not OWA!)... Outlook has gotten far, far, far better in recent years and as much as I fuss and hate on Microsoft products, using Outlook is not bad at all.

I like Gmail, but it took a long time to get used to it when I first started using it. You can't just dive in. You really need to grok Google's vision for the interface and be willing to work in that way or it will fight you... and you will lose.

On my mobile I use Touchdown for Android -- to me this is the best featured mobile app; although it does lack the integrations of the Outlook client, I do mostly only use my phone for send/receive.
Have you tried the new Outlook client for Android?
I tried it when it first launched and wasn't all that impressed. Mainly the way attachments and folders work didn't fit me well. Need to be able to attach items from my device, not cloud storage links.

My favourites are honestly Rackspace Web Mail and Zimbra. Clean, simple, fast. None of the extra fluff of other interfaces.
If I am stuck using Exchange then I like OWA.

Zimbra was pretty good. But Exchange and Outlook are so much better from the business organization side of things. Organizing my team and keeping track of everyone, CRM stuff notes etc. is awesome. Yes it does add a lot of extra stuff to Outlook but I just NEED that stuff to work most days.

I find Outlook to be problematic. It seems to freeze my laptop when email comes in for a second and often when deleting mails it has "dead" mails in the list that it can't figure out how to handle. They are already deleted but keep being displayed. So they are always in the way and you can't remove them.

The latest OWA interface on O365 is pretty awesome, I think. It's fast and reliable. Outlook can be a bit of a hog, but I depend on it for a lot of my organization habits.

If you have a large inbox or if it's been a while since you first created that outlook profile (OST) I highly recommend going in and renaming your OST file with .bak and letting it create a fresh one. Especially important for performance to do this every 6mths to 1yr if your OST is over 5GB or you search a lot in it. OST fragmentation = the suck.

I have consistently found OWA to be better than Outlook.

@scottalanmiller I can get around Outlook (and GMail which is my gold standard for keyboard operability) without using my mouse too much... OWA I can get around with, but I haven't figured out how to Mark messages with the keyboard (like if I want to select multiple messages and move them to a folder)...
I hate having to CTRL + Click messages for that... In Outlook proper, it's CTRL + Spacebar, then use arrow keys to move to the next message you want... CTRL Spacebar... repeat... I've not been able to get that to work in O365's OWA... (even if I switch it to Google's keyboard shortcuts...)

Outlook/OWA - maybe simply because I've used them for so long. Familiarity doesn't always breed contempt.
