Yeah, but that doesn't solve the texting or calling problem. - well it sorta fixes the calling problem because he can use VOIP. and might even be able to get T-mobile to forward his calls to his VOIP number.
Well.... they still have crazy silly requirements with the micro-SIMs. From what I've seen they don't act or respond anything like the GSM or international SIMs that other companies use.

Lucky for Scott - he's on T-mobile, a company that uses SIM cards and all the benefits.
Scott, you could bring along a cheap unlocked phone and just move the SIM next time

Yep. That's one of the cool features of SMS: easily portable and works with very cheap and easily available devices
I bought a Nokia 106 for $20 the other day. Fantastic phone. It's gone well over a week on a single battery charge. It doesn't support e-mail, but text and voice work like a dream.

So my dad, who still does not have a smart phone and so texts rather a bit is staying with me this week. And what I've learned from him is that he gets more spam texts than I get spam emails (close, but he gets more.) It's not that he gets a lot, but I don't get a lot of spam email either. But I can blacklist and report spam. His phone doesn't allow him to block or report spam so it just keeps coming. He has no means of stopping it.
Just this morning he got woken up at 3:30am by a spam text.

Didnt read the entire post, but I'm just going out on a limb and going to say that most people don't care if they're mimicking telegraph when we have modern solutions.
It's a simple, discrete means to communicate with someone rather than technologies like Facetime. Plus it's very intuitive to use.

You could very easily have WiFi service. . .

@DustinB3403 Well yes when you are on a Wifi network that you use. But without the SIM card your cell phone number will not work.

Not the primary number, this is true.
You could sign up for a free Google Voice number, which is purely Internet Based. And simply pay Google for the cost of any calling minutes used. Texting is free, unlimited.
This would make it a purely WiFi Cell phone.

That's weird. I've had a lot of Verizon phones and the SIM card was always optional. I've had them and only added SIM cards later, remove them when not needed. Never affected how it worked in the US.

Yes they are how all the Iphones and windows phones (ha ha ha) run now on Verizon. The SIM card does need to be changed to travel internationally however.

All Verizon 4G Android phones have the micro-SIM card in them as well. You are required to have that installed and activated to use any of their cell networks.

Verizon requires a SIM for any LTE device. The older CDMA didn't use SIM cards.

That's the kicker right there! Scott never worried about SIM cards because they weren't used until LTE came along. LTE is what requires them.

It was part of the change with moving over to LTE.
"Technically" you can use an AT&T SIM on a Verizon phone to access AT&T's LTE service, depending on the device and if it can hit the right channels. The base services are still CDMA for voice and other data services, but get info from the SIM for registration versus the old school IMEI info. There are registration issues and various other things that make it not work, but LTE follows GSM encoding so in theory it will work.
Devices designed around GSM usually can't talk CDMA, but since CMDA is a limited market most of their devices also speak GSM. All under one SIM.

I had already moved to TMobile at that point, I think. I had SIM cards in my Verizon phones before then going back to 2007 because of my travel.
