      Anyone try this yet?

      https://www.automatic.com/

$130 one time fee. Includes 3G data at no extra cost (which they undoubtedly use to track you and send information back that they then sell to whomever).

I haven't used this, but it reminds me of that car commercial with the parents saying oh hey I gave our daughter the car, oh wait she's there, and then the parents set of the alarm.

Useful sure, especially if you're afraid of your car being stolen etc. Is it worth the lost privacy though?

Through an ad, haven't looked over the website much yet, it talks about tracking milage - this could be really handy for sales persons or in my case, my doctors. Get in the car, tap a button on the app to start a trip record, tap again at destination.

Also mentioned that the app can disable SMSing while within range etc.

For recording mileage I could see that as being a relatively easy way to do it.

The thing I question is whether or not the driver will remember to do it at each destination / stop.

That's funny. "Lost privacy." Do you think they don't know where you are already? Do you have a smart phone, etc.?

This could easily be used by law enforcement to scoop up car thieves. Cops already plant bait cars, why not use this to follow it to bad guy HQ?

Mostly because when you steal a car you're hot-wiring it.

You'd think as a thief you'd see something you'd not expect under the car dash.

I more meant the whoever the info gets sold to, that was mentioned. In the end, your personal information and whereabouts is not really that private these days. This would just be one more place they can get your information, not some new kind of breach of privacy.

How big is the box? Should be relatively easy to hide if made this century.

@art_of_shred true, and valid way to look at it.

I was specifically thinking more of the "who are these guys and why would I want them to have my whereabouts?"

Rather than the businesses buying the data.

This would get plugged into the on-board just under the dash, so 3.5"x1" ?

Yeah, it's really a front for a ring of chop-shops that want to steal your car. Or maybe it's burglars who want to know when you're the least likely to be home so they can ransack your house. 😛

Well, I think your car is safe. Not sure it would be worth their time to steal that thing... (sorry, couldn't help it)

Hey now... I saw what you drive, besides the minion mobile!

                                          The 2016 Chrysler 200S?

                                          yeah, that yellow minion mobile!

@art_of_shred true, and valid way to look at it.

I was specifically thinking more of the "who are these guys and why would I want them to have my whereabouts?"

Rather than the businesses buying the data.

Yeah, it's really a front for a ring of chop-shops that want to steal your car. Or maybe it's burglars who want to know when you're the least likely to be home so they can ransack your house. 😛

                                            Wouldn't surprise me....

Oh hey, track your car everywhere, we even pay for the cell service, and your house is robbed, and your car missing (chopped into a billion parts)
