What Are You Doing Right Now

One thing that we did enjoy, one vendor that hand paints Nerf guns and plastic weapons put on a game room for the kids and that was fun. Playing hangman with a full size skeleton, doing Keplunk with a ten foot tall thing of swords and skulls... that was neat. The kids had fun.
-
The kids loved all of the "stuff" from their shows. And they loved learning that there was a community of people who also enjoy the same shows as them. But other than that, they were confused as to the point as well. Even as young girls that were really into the topic (we only went because it was the big US con for their favourite show) they found the whole thing generally boring and weird. They were happy that we went, but now that they know what it is like, and know that they can buy the same stuff on Amazon for cheaper (anytime, and fast) I don't see them wanting to go again.

This was specifically a "show con", anime in this case.
I don't get these either. I've done a couple of them over the years. But meh..
On the other hand, I used to do GenCon yearly and other gaming cons randomly.
Of course they had "show" also. That is part of any con. But gaming cons are also about actually gaming. For me, I would try games I didn't already play to broaden my experience. Or I would do a D&D session, but since it was with complete strangers it broaden my experiences in a different way.

can anyone suggest a quick & simple blogging platform for low tech users? Must be very easy to post to.

Hard to get easier than WordPress.

i'm looking for a platform that will allow users to post from web pages and not need to log into the admin dashboard etc.
WP has their 'Press This' extension but ........

You can make non-admin accounts for this. Anything you publish too is a dashboard by some definition. But that can't be an end goal. If you want simple, it's not going to get simpler. Just don't tell them it is a dashboard and they won't know. No matter what, they have to log in and choose to post. Blogger, Tumbler, WordPress... all equally easy.

I don't get these at all. They really don't seem like much fun to me.
On the other hand, PAX, GenCon, and Origins are a ton of fun. Can't wait till I have the time to go to one again.

Man, what con did you go to?
My Hero Convention: Texas Smash.
It's exactly how I had pictured it. I hadn't expected it to be anything but boring. I mean, what could their possibly be interesting to do at a con (other than maybe drink?) I would describe the whole thing as just really expensive Hot Topic shopping. Goofy trinkets at really high prices. Nothing of interest going on, nothing really going on. A few voice actors that few people know talking about.... how they talk? Lots of people dressed up but unless you are into dressing up as things, nothing is as boring as that. Fine for those people, but to the general world, other people dressing up doesn't qualify as exciting in any way, lol.
Mostly, it was like going to a really expensive fair vendor tent and loads of people just milling about shopping. Shopping for stuff you really which you didn't own because its just "stuff" to fill the house with.
Yep, all that is true, if you thing those things boring - which clearly you do. Toss in the fact that you likely don't have other friends that you might only see at these types of events, and again, not surprised you were bored at all.
There are panels (a panel of people talking about a topic) that some people find interesting, but again, if that's not your thing, then yeah, boring.
It's like going to a football game while not being a fan of football - you'll find it boring too.

This was specifically a "show con", anime in this case. Not like a gaming con or a business con. GenCon and stuff like that I can totally think of loads of ways that those would be fun or exciting. There is stuff to do, stuff to learn. But this is nothing but voice actors from shows (that they have no creative interest in) charging for autographs. And loads of people selling junk that I would hate to own (just moulded plastic to advertise someting) at higher prices than I could get on Amazon, with less selection than Amazon, in a less comfortable environment than Amazon.
I'm not sure I've been to a "show Con" as you call it - as a parent I would definitely be bored as ever at an event for a show I had no interest in or knew anything about.
As many of you know, I go to all of the LFL delivered Star Wars Conventions here and abroad. Sure, most of the stuff sold at the con can be had online, but there are frequently things that can't be found online there as well, out of print items, or super low count items.. again, sometimes those things can be found on eBay, other times not.
In general I don't buy much of that stuff anymore (yeah I used to buy tons, still have tons - need to lighten the load!), but these days I buy art, or much more exclusive items.

A con for shows. Like a TV show or a movie. Like a show about comics. Rather than a con for business (Spiceworld) or for gaming (GenCon.)

Well in that case - the Star Wars ones I guess completely qualify. They are solely about Star Wars. Otherwise I think I've mainly been to more general ones - SciFi/Fantasy/Pop Culture blended ones.
Though I have have wanted to go to TransFormers Con, and BattleStar Con, but meh... such a single limited topic in those cases seem more likely to get get boring quickly, and since they aren't local - likely wouldn't be worth the expense.

I don't want to be at work today, fighting yet another cold that my kid brought home from daycare. . .
So now I'm on a benadryl espresso downer-up and in a fog.

Ug - hope you kick it soon.
I was (maybe still am) sick for 4+ weeks. The first 13 days were mostly just feeling blah - day 14 - home sick, week 3, missed 3 days of work, week 4, mostly feeling blah again - this time with drainage... this week, feeling slightly better than blah.
-
Yeah this is all head congestion, but I'm literally getting off of yet another cold she brought home from a few weeks ago which had everything but congestion.
It's just a crappy ride right now.

Oh and my coworker left early because he was feeling ill too. . . so yay me.
