How a High Minimum Wage Can Cripple a Business

@coliver You're kidding. My wife is from Indiana. We actually live about 10 mins south of Indiana now.

I was in a Panera bread on Monday in Elk Grove, IL (NW suburb of Chicago) and they now have screens installed for ordering. They were not active yet, but in testing.

Apple bee's has tablet things on the table to replace waiters. It let's you order, pay and ask for more drink etc/page someone. there is still someone to bring food out and drinks but there are getting replaced with technology. It's kinda sad. It's just not the same.

Have they fully committed to that? At the Applebees near our house they are on the table but there is still a waiter.

Chili's has had those table display screens for years here, the waiter still takes the order... the only thing you can order from the screen is apps and desserts.

I just saw one of those for the first time recently in Houston. I had no idea that they were putting them in. I feel like they are still testing it.

We were able to order drinks from it.

I haven't been to Chilli's so I'm not sure where they are at on their's here.

We have to order from screens in McDonald's now. I guess you have that over there too? I thought I'd hate it, but actually it's not been too bad because I can never decide what I want and prefer to order without the pressure of a massive queue standing behind me.

Nope. They still have the people that demand $15/hr pay but can't get the order right.

And this video has been going around facebook about that.

I would love that. But no, not in the US and not in Panama and not in Ireland or Spain both of which I was in recently.
Had the person get the order wrong (when I asked for "no meat" they decided that I must have meant "triple the meat") just yesterday.

I have not seen any fast food places in the states using automated ordering machines yet.

I take it you haven't been to a Chili's or Applebee's lately? Both of them have the machines, some have more options enabled than others.

Don't really consider those to be fast food. Takes a while to eat there.

Doh.. missed the fast food part of your post.... Yeah I haven't seen any fast food self ordering either (unless you count ordering from Taco Bell using their new phone App.

This was in my paper yesterday: Waitress service comes to McDonald's http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/aug/05/mcdonalds-table-service-trial-uk-fast-food
I like McDonald's and eat there a lot. Mainly because my kids like it, the food is consistently ok, the price dirt cheap and I've always found the service to be pretty good. From the article, it sounds like they're better in Europe than the US though (or more likely, the competition is much better in the US).

in the US, McD's is anything but cheap. More expensive than a lot of fancier restaurant options.

Not really. It's cheap and you get what you pay for too. It's crap.
