I have no idea how to describe it. Maple syrup is a "reference taste" that you use to describe other things. Never had to explain it to someone who had never had it before.

Maple is a pretty major flavoring here. Lots of things have real or fake maple syrup flavor and a lot of things have maple smoked flavor (cooked with maple wood). Maple is also popular for furniture and cabinetry.

A gallon of maple syrup! Wow! How much did that set you back? How long will it last? It's about eight bucks for a very small bottle here in the UK - generally Canadian. Is Canadian better than American? It's generally too expensive for me to justify, so we stick with the classic, and considerably inferior, Lyle's Golden Syrup instead.

Canadian and American are the same. The US makes it in NY and Vermont and Canada makes it in Quebec. If you check a map, that is one region just split by a river. So it is a single area just with a border through the middle of it 🙂

Co-worker just showed me his pics of their maple syrup canning process they did over the weekend. He mentioned about the cold too and was surprised that you needed that.

We got our gallon for $47 because we got it Upstate. Here in downstate that same gallon is $100.

A gallon will last quite a while. Although probably not a year. Maybe not half. My kids eat a lot of pancakes.

@Carnival-Boy If you were referring to how long does maple syrup stay edible, pretty much indefinitely in the fridge.

That was going to be my question, too! 🙂

Lol yeah. As a sugar syrup, it is practically a preservative itself.

No, I was referring to how long it takes Scott to demolish a bottle 🙂
Made pancakes for breakfast this morning, as it's my daughter's birthday. 200g plain flour, 200ml buttermilk, 2 tsp baking soda, 2 eggs. I found myself wishing we had some maple syrup to go with them!

It tastes so good with the real stuff that you do go through it quite quickly.

I go through about a gallon every month or 2. I use it as a sugar replacement in a lot of places.

I also use it in baking as a sugar replacement. I just made apple pie muffins this morning using it, actually. They are still in the oven.

@carnival-boy Happy birthday to your daughter 🙂 Now go out and splurge on some real maple syrup and repeat pancakes tomorrow! 😉
