Just finished a phone interview that seemed to go very well. Not the really nice role I applied for, but even closer to home and the ability to work remotely.
Unless it's working for the company @WrCombs is working for
Yeah, no. It's no POS place (both meanings work)

Thanks for the heads up. On our systems at work that use it, it seems to have a 1MB block file. Is that the norm for XFS?
XFS block size default is 4KB. Maximum is 64KB.
I wonder if it's the underlying SAN doing something then. If I create a word document and make the contents "Hello World", it takes up 1MB, even though the files size is only a few k.
That could be any number of things. How are you determining the size that it takes up?

I put 7 down because 1) I was in front of my computer until 4:00 pm 2) i spent time taking care of my son as well which would equal 2 hours of the work day not worked.
- When did you start?
Started at 8:00
- Not relevant. They can't stop paying you when someone talks to you at the water cooler or you get distracted by work conversations. Those things happen at the office or at home, they are part of your work day. When in the office you get loads and loads of time that you can't answer the phone, get to emails, etc. It's just normal day.
That's fair.
So definitely an eight hour day. There has to be some kind of soft limit, like stepping away for half of the day and not being available is one thing, but being slightly unavailable for a short period of time is just normal work day stuff.
so walking away from work to help my son get lunch, get him drinks, etc through out the day would equate to the same time away from my desk at work or stuck in conversations with other people.
Yes, just normal activities that yes, are different between work at home and work at the office... but at the end of the day it's overhead of life that your employer can't get away from. You are doing more work for them being at home, they should absolutely not be paying you less for doing more! We've already established that you did more valuable activies while home, so value to teh employer is not an issue. You being home is to their benefit financially, you should not be being punished for doing more!

Literally the windows command prompt and dir \server\myshare and looking at the free space.

You could have just as easily done nothing for work all day at home assuming no calls came in... so Scott's claim that you send people home to work - meh. As many things - it's completely dependent upon the situation, and that can change daily.
You are using false logic. You CAN do zero work in either case, that's a given. But being at home makes people more productive in the real world. This is fact, you can't dispute it. It's a very, very well known fact that on average quite a bit more productivity happens at home than in an office (and that's before you account for things like commute time, stress, etc.)
You can also be shot in an office dispute. But obviously we don't mention that as it isn't relevant. Making people go to an office is not to get more work out of them, period.

uh - what? He started at 8 AM, let's assume his stated lunch was from noon to 1 PM, and he closed the computer at 4 PM... that seems like 7 hours to me.
Am I missing something?
I think the issue is that he got docked an hour while working from home, but while in the office, he can dick around for that hour or more and still get paid for 8.
Not just can, but from his measurements, seems like he does (probably not intentionally.)

Your rate can never go lower than your base hourly rate, say $20/hour for "missing an hour of work"

My hourly rate doesnt' change from xx.xx, My pay for the day would be an hour short making for less hours of the day affecting overall pay not the rate at which I am paid.
As it should be - you only worked 7 hours, not 8.....
8 AM to noon = 4 hours
1 PM to 4 PM = 3 hours
total hours = 7 hourswhere is my math wrong here?
thats what i said
OH - so... there's no problem here because you are being paid completely accurately.
So what the fuck are we talking about then? And if you say you've been shorted an hour - you better show me how you were shorted that hour compared to working the exact same time frame in the office vs home.
The way it was explained to me was only put what you actively worked IE on calls, working on projects etc. not the total time spent in front of the computer.
Then you should report them for employment fraud as that's absolutely blatantly illegal. 100% clear, no gray area, illegal. Employers cannot do that. If you are at work, you get paid. Period. The amount of wiggle room on that is zero.

OK - but you said you spend 6.5 hours working on client calls - and .5 hours reading work email... that's 7 hours... Are you saying you're only going to be paid for 6.5 hours?
And all through lunch you think about work and right now you are talking about it, so that's all time working, too.

Thats how I understand it
Your understanding makes your job far worse than any of us have understood it to be thus far. The upside is that you can now take any of their clients and they are powerless to stop you because you are being violated under slavery laws and are untouchable. All contracts with them are invalidated, there can be no concept like non-disclosure or non-compete because they aren't acting as legal employers.
-
@DustinB3403 said in What Are You Doing Right Now:
That's illegal, reading email is work. Someone has to do it so other things can be done.
In some places (not many), even being ABLE to read your email makes you billable for that time. That's why some employers are not cutting staff off from messaging and emails when the end of the day comes around so that it is impossible for them to claim to have decided to read emails when they shouldn't.

Lastly.
Find another job already. You're being taken advantage of.
working on it.
There HAS to be somewhere better than this. It's hard to believe that just about anything wouldn't be an improvement, and that there aren't places looking to hire. What do you feel is holding you back from finding something else? What limiting factors seem to be coming up? It's been a year now, at least, and you have already saturated the experience potential of the shop that you are in.

You are in NY though. Nebraska is a completely shit market. But this seems impossibly bad. He's obviously way more qualified than all the people he's working with as a starting point!

@scottalanmiller still, is there only 1 employer in Nebraska?
I really think WRCombs is simply failing at these interviews if he's not actually looking and applying.

I can only put what "work I did" so basically Billable hours only.
Assuming you knew that before you worked from home, why the he’ll would you have done anything except that.

I think this is the problem. "Work You Did" and "Billable Hours" can't be the same. There is work time that isn't billable to a customer (unless they are faking hours.) So if you only put the billable hours, there is an issue.

yeah sure - I would only mean his daily pay, who would ever expect his hourly to change? certainly not me..
I asked - does this equate to less pay (in regards to this exact situation - was implied) and he answered - not hourly, but over all, yes - but that's not true.
If we assume his normal hours are 8-5 with a 1 hour lunch, he'd get paid for 8 hours.
In this case he's claiming that he's getting paid less because he's home and worked 8-4 with a 1 hour lunch... Well since he's hourly - there would be no difference between being at work and working or being home and working - he only worked 7 hours, so he gets paid 7 hours. Now - all that said - he did further break that down into 6.5 billable and .5 to corporate email... now the question is - is the company going to try to say they don't have to pay him for that .5 for reading corporate email - which of course we know legally they can't do.
