@CCWTech You'd likely need something that's known as Backup as a Service (BaaS) app. You might have to rely only on agent-based backups for VMs without a backup appliance. I believe the main reason behind backup appliances/servers is agentless VM backups.
BaaS essentially always means that it is going to cloud. If it isn't, it's hard to call it a service as you are doing most of it and there isn't any back up service.
Appliances don't imply agentless, I'm sure some appliance does that. But the big appliance players almost all do agent and agentless, and some are only one or the other. The biggest ones, like Datto and Unitrends, do agents for sure... one exclusively, one optionally. And a Veeam based appliance will do either, too.

We like BackupAssist.
Backs up to Local, NAS, RSYNC, FTP, RDX, USB Drives, Private Cloud, Public Cloud, iSCSI, Tape, etc....
All with Central Management.Been using them for 10 years or more. Have it installed on over a hundred servers right now. We also VERY much prefer the way it detects Ransomware over other providers (like Unitrends).
We use it mostly for RDX and iSCSI, but have jobs for every destination available if you look at all the installs.

Thanks for pointing that out, Scott. I stand corrected. I'm quite interested myself if there's a backup solution out there with a hosted central management console. Although, if it's a Linux based appliance that can manage backups of Windows-based VMs, I'd check it out too. Veeam is excellent but I find it too Windows-centric. No Linux-based central management, proxies have to be Windows either etc.

I've been using Altaro but found out today that you can't even do a file level restore unless you have a Server OS
The built-in Windows Server Backup with Windows Admin Center seems to fit these requirements.

I think UrBackup dropped mac now. Too much trouble with the new filesystem and some other issues if I remember correctly.

But that would backup to the hosting location. This is for local backups.

Nearly all companies want a local backup, even if they also have a remote one. I can't imagine ever wanting BaaS without also having this. I often prioritize offsite backups over local, but local is cheap and fast and it is really rare that you don't want to have it for the majority of your restores.

Nearly all companies want a local backup, even if they also have a remote one. I can't imagine ever wanting BaaS without also having this. I often prioritize offsite backups over local, but local is cheap and fast and it is really rare that you don't want to have it for the majority of your restores.
Except, that's not what it was about. It was about a single cross-client centrally managed backup solution. That's what my last comment was about, nothing regarding the points you made.

WAC would be great if there was some WAC API for centralizing WAC management.

But that would backup to the hosting location. This is for local backups.
This is true, but you could also mount the cloud storage or use something like rclone to copy those files to any number of cloud storage providers.
