How do you choose a web designer/marketing agency.

Bit of an open ended question.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
I have never successfully hired one. They have all turned out to be fluff or straight up crooks. That is why I took the last year or so to really learn WordPress, CSS, PHP, and social media marketing.
-
I have also had the same issue (which a lot of you saw with the MangoCon site). But I have taken the time to learn it all myself. I have given up trying to hire someone else for any web work. I have picked a wordpress template that I love and will just learn to use that one really well.

@Minion-Queen A lot of times, that's all it takes is a really nicely decide and easy to modify theme.

Yes, it is a full time job anyway. If you don't know how to update the site you can't count on someone else.

Oh and on different sites, I have tried probably hiring half a dozen different designers and not a single one of them ever worked out.

Keep the replies coming guys. This is helpful.

So I used to do a lot with Drupal. The problem is there are so many fakes and liars that real people just give up. The market has been so saturated that it's not worth the effort and with things like Square Space and Wix, who really needs a custom site except for very specific reasons?
I gave up on it a while ago. Plus a lot of the clients are straight up crooks.

That would be the trend that I see. Hiring one that is any good seems nearly impossible.

I found a good local web designer. I would say finding one is like any other professional service. You ask other business owners who they used and if they would recommend them.
-
Are you asking because you want to be the company that is called for web design, or because you need to find one?
-
Another tip, if you want a real designer, you're going to have to pay for it. Specifically stay away from places that charge per page. That most likely means they are either hand coding the whole site, or they are scamming you. Either way it's bad for you. With a real CMF (Drupal) or even CMS (Wordpress) the page count makes no difference.
I've even seen some paid for Drupal themes that instead of modifying the theme correctly, required you to have the PHP module enabled (to write PHP directly in the content area) and used that to design the content area. It's mind boggling.

Good web designers are definitely expensive, and busy. That's part of the problem. Looking at portfolios, knowing what their support team is like all come into play.

I'm asking because there is a strong likelihood I might be in that field soon.
Also asking because I want to find out what the gut reaction is to web guys.

Most of them are people that have no business running a business. Bidding things out for pennies on the dollar.

My personal experience is that they're a little underneath sales minions, which are most often referred to in many, colorful, 4-letter words.
