So I threw XenServer 7 on a T3500 workstation. Mounting the local storage as an lvm partition doesn't want to work. I'm about to try just mounting the storage and using ext3 on it. We'll see how that goes (6 TB RAID10). Having to run

      vgchange -a y

to get the volumes active..... hrm... time to add the mount points in /etc/fstab for the LV and then add that to XenServer maybe? Worth a shot.

Did you create a single array of 6TB and install XS7 to that?

Or are you running XS7 from a SD/USB card?

Nope, it's on a USB drive. If it dies I'll just reinstall.

And then you'd have to remap the array.

              I assume using this?

For shits and giggles I'm gonna break my home lab tonight (pull the usb)

And follow that guide, it would be worthwhile to know if that works..

From my testing (in my "lab" ... aka non production machine at work) it works flawlessly.

Which is why I am not too worried about my USB drive dying.

Though for time sake in a crash, it would be nice to just have a clone of the boot USB. (Instead of reinstalling, re-updating, and then reattaching SR.)

Well you have a clone for the purpose of having it. Obviously it would save some time (should everything work).

But if it doesn't it would be great to know if the steps there work.

So the partition did not get set up properly by the installation routine? My guess is the "over 2TB" hypothesis again.

                        Yep.

In fact, it works so well, I have not yet even made a clone! 🙂

Shhhhh, DO NOT tell my server this.

@BRRABill It's OKAY your server knows, and will blow up on you when you really need it to be stable.

On a side topic, a full backup of my filer (6.5TB) took 16 hours to complete, the delta will run tonight, and should be way faster!

But now it's done and out of the way.

I can't speak for v7, but I know similar instructions work for v6.5

And before you get on the omg that took forever, it was the first backup ever taken (running 6.5 XS) of this VM (since rebuilding) and the VM is near max planned usage.

I'm curious about this as well.

When you installed XS, did it see your 6 TB array?
Did you choose a SR location during installation?
If so did it try to add it, and auto create ext3 like Dustin's did and fail to mount?
or did it just ignore it since it was over 2 TB?

if you didn't choose a SR during install, What about the LVM didn't work?

No, quite the contrary - my 700 GB took 30+ hours, so your system was fast as hell!
