Mostly because when you steal a car you're hot-wiring it.
You'd think as a thief you'd see something you'd not expect under the car dash.
How big is the box? Should be relatively easy to hide if made this century.

This would get plugged into the on-board just under the dash, so 3.5"x1" ?
