RE: Loving the new community
Greg, great to have you here. And thank you, we are trying hard to make this someplace special.

RE: Ahhhh Promotion Without Guilt!
Welcome. We are happy to see more service providers and vendors coming to the platform. We at GroveSocial think that enabling connections is our role and how we create value for everyone.

RE: Who's paying for this?
MangoLassi is a proof of concept, and hopefully flagship, internally managed online community from GroveSocial which is a subsidiary of Dutch Colonial Heritage Development Corporation (DCHDC) in Texas. GroveSocial is a social media community building and social media marketing consulting firm startup that looks to assist companies with their social media strategies and to build and manage complete social media experiences on their behalf, both public and private.
GroveSocial is very much in a startup phase right now and MangoLassi is our first hosted online community. It is really a proving ground for some advanced community technology to demonstrate our ability to build, host, manage and nurture a community. We chose to go down the technology community path for our first community because of the natural synergy that exists between IT professionals and social media, for one, and because our IT consultants, on whom we rely heavily for the technical portions of our service, are extremely versed in the technology areas of social media and play an important role in our overall strategy and in the community here. Because it takes IT to build an online community, it is just natural to have an online community about IT. Surprisingly, public forums and communities that are not run by a single vendor (Cisco has their own community around Cisco products, for example) are few and far between. Nearly all answer to a product or single vendor for mission and goal. We saw an opening and an opportunity and decided that this was the best place to go, and from the looks of it, we were right!
But by no means is MangoLassi our only community. More are in the pipeline already and last night's maintenance was part of that preparation work as we change some of the delivery stack to enable multiple communities on the same platform. We'll announce new communities in here as they go live, hopefully to generate some additional interest. GroveSocial plans to operate and maintain several vibrant, living communities of our own to showcase what we can do, in additional to building communities for customers.

RE: Tonight: Architectural Updates
Sorry about the delays. Because we were changing ports and redirects we had to bring down the application for a minute or so there.

RE: Tonight: Architectural Updates
I'm sure that there are questions. The change this evening was to move the application platform behind an NGINX web accelerator. We should have a little more flexibility now.

RE: Tonight: Architectural Updates
And we are back up! Please report if anyone has issues after this point. We believe that all is well.

Tonight: Architectural Updates
We are planning to make some major architectural changes this even. We expect minimal downtime as some testing is already underway and I'll notify you here when we are back post updates.

An Evening of Changes
Well, Addie did some changes tonight and I have no idea what she did. Hoping that she will get some of this figured out in the morning. Some of the site looks great and some of it is crazy. Sorry for the weirdness tonight. Trying to get it figured out.

MangoLassi How To Post a Picture from Any URL
On ML you can upload a picture using the little "picture" icon but that is only useful if you have a picture on you computer that you want to upload for us to host. That's fine but quite often you are going to watch to simply link to an image that is hosted somewhere else already and you just want to provide a link. Well you can do that, there just isn't a handy button for it. The syntax is very easy. Instead of the picture button, use the link button. This provides you with the link dialogue. Just like when making a link, replace the "link url" with the full path to the image (including the http:// part) and replace "link text" with "image.jpg" and in front of the whole thing add an exclamation point. Okay, that sounds like a lot, but do it once and you'll see how easy it is and then adding new images in the future that you already have hosted elsewhere is super simple.

NodeBB .0.4.2 is Out
So the latest update to our hosting platform is out now, but NodeBB's own site is down so we are wary of attempting the update at this time and are waiting to see what is happening there before we gauge the value is trying to update this weekend versus waiting. We have no major bugs hurting us at this point.

Not a Single Spam Post
So it has been roughly three months and more than fourteen thousand posts since MangoLassi went live and one of the most interesting things is that not one, single SPAM post has shown up. We have been carefully monitoring the traffic here and there are no posting bots or spammers yet. We know full well that that day will come, but that it has not come already is amazing.

RE: Chopping off their own feet....
@Carnival-Boy said:
Does Mango Lassi intend to have secret groups for high ability members then? Sounds a bit cliquey to me.
No, no secret groups here. That was discussed when the community was created and acknowledged as being a huge mistake of some other forums. The idea sounds benign when you first propose it but having exclusive content for an "in" crowd will cause very bad things long term. That will never be allowed here. But we are very glad to have had the chance to learn from others. Without that insight we might otherwise have thought that it was a good idea too.

RE: Making Changes This Weekend...
Ah, that is just a change in the template to move them from up there in the top left to down in the lower right.

RE: Making Changes This Weekend...
That is good that the speed is improved. That should get a little better yet as more functions get cached into memory. All of the restarts today are slowing things down. And we did not do the MongoDB 2.4 to 2.6 update yet. That should bring a little more speed as well when that finally arrived. We have a major Ubuntu version update coming in under a week so lots of new code, potentially, under the hood.
