    • Happy 5 Year Anniverary

That's right, today is the one half decade mark since MangoLassi went live on March 4th, 2014. It has been a great five years, who knew that we would come so far! And it is almost time for our third annual conference, too.

After five years, and 1.25 million unique visitors, 452,000 posts, 18,700 topics, and millions upon millions of views, ML is still going strong and continues to grow and improve. This community has been so open, welcoming, friendly, professional. It is great to see the kind of cooperation and attitudes that we get here.

And here is to another five years!

Thank you to everyone who has joined and participated and been a part of this awesome family. And special thanks to the NodeBB team ( @julian @baris @psychobunny ) who have made this possible on the tech side.

    • MangoCon 2019

Finally, MangoLassi is happy to announce that MangoCon 2019 has been scheduled and will be...

      May 8th - 10th, in Dallas, Texas

More details to come by the end of the week. Interested in speaking? Interesting in attending? Interesting in sponsoring? Let us know.

This is our third "annual" technology conference. Come and meet other IT pros, watch real technical presentations - not product sales pitches, get real life peer review, bring the community from online to IRL.

We've had a great time at our last two conferences, both previously in Rochester, New York. Now we are moving to Dallas for easier flights, drives, hotels, etc.

      Hope to see everyone there!

    • NYC Mango Meetup June 23, 2017

That's right, we are expanding into NYC and doing our second Mango Event in the area this June! The event is being hosted at the AetherStore offices which are right down the street from Grand Central Terminal so are exceptionally easy to get to from anywhere in the region. We want to do an event that can draw a lot of the crowd in from NJ as we have loads of people on the NJ side.

So the big questions are.... what do people want to see at the event? Who can make it out? How do we schedule so that people can get there?

    • Not a Single Spam Post

So it has been roughly three months and more than fourteen thousand posts since MangoLassi went live and one of the most interesting things is that not one, single SPAM post has shown up. We have been carefully monitoring the traffic here and there are no posting bots or spammers yet. We know full well that that day will come, but that it has not come already is amazing.

We are working on scheduling a Dallas - Fort Worth Mango Meetup in May. It has been too long since we had a formal Mango event and we are going to try to get a trend moving in the DFW area. Looking for a good schedule for when to have the evening and we need a call for speakers. Let's start creating some awesome content from our DFW group and show the other regions how things get done in Texas!

    • Community Update & Patch Saturday: March 8, 2014

Well Saturday was our first day of production updates since the community went live on Monday so this was a big test of the platform. I am happy to report that our updates went in without any downtime and we have a raft of new features that I think will do much to really improve the community experience. We are still looking for many more features and are nowhere near a mature platform state but after today's updates I feel that everyone is going to be very happy about the state of the community.

So what all did we gain today?

Emoticon / Emoji Drop Down Selector. While typing just start a word with a colon and you will see a drop down menu of emoji from which to choose. Start typing a word to see autocomplete show emoji starting with your description. An example is ":dog" but without the quotes, of course.

Text Coloration. Now colors are available %(blue)[while typing]. This formatting is a little odd but easy to do.

Search. This is the big one. The search menu option now appears and does an awesome job searching through the database for topics and posts. Try it out, we are very happy with it.

HTML5 Desktop Notifications. If you accept the "Allow Notifications" question that comes up, MangoLassi can now pop up desktop notifications instead of requiring you to look at the site at all times in order to see if anyone has responded to you or if there is new content on a topic that you are following.

Downvoter Anti "Troll" System This is an experimental feature. A topic's opacity is determined by its downvote status. If the community downvotes a topic too much it will slowly fade away making it harder and harder to get attention should we have people intentionally posting poor content. We will see over time how this impacts real behavior.

Email Handling We know that people are clamoring for email notifications on threads but, at this time, that is not possible. That is coming, I assure you, but at this time we finally have emails working for things like sign up notification and password resets. This is the first step towards email notifications.

Metro Tiles This is the one that everyone will notice straight away, on the main page the previously static tiles are now animated and show some of the content from those topic areas.

New Categories Trying to strike a balance of having ways to organize posts but making it always clear where a posts goes is important. We have expanded the range of posting options by adding some very clear new categories. New categories include "IT Careers - the place to discuss job hunting, resumes, certifications, training, relocation and all other aspects of getting a position and improving your career", "Job Postings - For anyone to post for positions that they want to hire. Could be head hunters, recruiters or just regular IT Pros looking to hire." and "IT Business - the place to discuss the business of IT for people working as Managed Service Providers, Consultants, VARs, etc. Talk about services, pricing, business practices, etc." As always, all technical discussions, the bread and butter of the community, will remain in a single category because there is no means of reliably segregating the discussions in an intuitive and meaningful way.

    • RE: Why the name Mangolassi?

@nervo welcome to the MangoLassi community! Great to see you here. We always welcome visitors over from the NodeBB forums. Great to see other users of the platform checking us out. To the best of our knowledge this is the busiest NodeBB platform out there. Every post that you see here started here, nothing here migrated from another platform or community. We built MangoLassi from day one on NodeBB.

There is no Desi connection, I am afraid. The title was proposed a bit as an inside joke but a bunch of people liked it and asked to keep it. So it stuck. A very popular forum that is much like this one makes references to spicy food heavily and, of course, the perfect compliment to a very spicy mean is a delicious Mango Lassi. Hence the name.

Our community is very international, though. We have people from everywhere here and more joining from all over the world all of the time.
