RE: You Cannot Virtualize That

Definitely looking for feedback and ideas on this one. Trying to get the idea across but struggling to figure out if I've worded it in a good way.
The depth of thought that is displayed is obvious. Your entire article makes complete sense to me. Your ability to articulate your thoughts, and deliver them to others (while retaining readability) is amazing.
Thank you.
My pee break is over! Back to bed for me.

RE: If you are new drop in say hello and introduce yourself please!
@scottalanmiller thanks for the shout out!
I was very happy to have made it last night.
I'm currently a 1 man show. I'm trying to expand that into a larger group of guys.
I'm looking to constantly learn new things and how to best help in any scenerio. If I don't know something I find the persons that do. That's how I get things done.
I have a 40hr job along side my work so I'm very busy and I can't always contribute. But I try.
Thank you for the invite @Minion-Queen to ML I wish I'd known about this a while ago!To everyone else Hello!

RE: Programming Printers
Well I had a post that I was almost done formating, and I was going to check a name and lost it. Grrr. Anyways. That was one stupidly arrogant, and completely off base act on his behalf.
The OP just needed help and all he did was derail the whole thing.
If someone did that in the middle of the dc down the other day that would have been horrible.
To @Dashrender I believe I was on SW then if I recall. Unfortunately I missed that one!
I always have looked up to @scottalanmiller it was clear he was very smart and knowledgeable. I was beyond excited when him and @Mike-Davis started up the Spice Corp in the area. Just sad it took be almost 10 years to be able to go and meet them both.
Very comical read thank you Scott!

RE: Too much on my plate
Wow, lots of work.
You are the director, so I assume you have others that are helping and you are in more of a directive role.If you are deeply involved in all aspects of every project then that is tough. Certainly you can get it done, but not in a reasonable time frame.
I would ask for temporary management help (if your alone) until some of the projects are completed. I'm thinking an experienced project manager. (Scrum, Lean)
Let them take one or two of the projects, they can do the main work, thinking and bring you updates which take less time for you to make decisions on. Then you will have time to focus more on the other projects.
You have "boss #1, boss #2, boss #3 etc..."
Each boss has his own function and reports to someone higher in the ladder, who then makes a desicion. When they needed help that structure was developed. You need the same thing just temporarily.
I wish you the best with this.

RE: What does your desk look like?
I just got my workstation back up and running. I have been working from my laptop for the past month and a half. I still need to adjust the mount a bit. It's dipping on the right a bit. I think it's finally time to balance the mount out with the last monitor.

RE: Ubiquiti Access Point Missing
@gjacobse said in Ubiquiti Access Point Missing:
Working on trying to find six access points onsite without being a ceiling monkey. The controller isn't finding them, and while I have run an IP scan, I don't believe that the UBNT APs respond to ping requests.
Is there any way to make them want to call home? they have been reset (power cycled) already.
In the unifi folder you should find the unifi discovery tool. Use it to scan the network it should find them.
Or
Download fing to a mobile and scan the network, you should be able to scan and ping the AP that way
Or you can use Nmap on a computer.
The APs will respond to a ping.
Once you find them you can SSH in using defaults username: ubnt password: ubnt
Point the AP back to the controller using the inform cmd.

So yeah... there was some water on my kitchen floor, turns out it was leaking out of my now very warm refrigerator. I'm fairly sure that next will be me getting struck by lightning (even though it's sunny out). FML.
Did you turn it off and turn it on again?
I kicked the shit out of it and cursed it severely, is that the same thing?
I reread this to be...
I kicked the shit out of it recursively, is that the same thing? -

He had about 6 servers spun up(running on no better than server 2003) in that network between the two sets of hardware. They only had the creds for 2, or 3 of them, several were nonfunctional. But the systems were necessary for business function. They ended up "figuring something else out since they didn't know how to fix anything"
But all of the systems were still running and using resources despite the fact they had all mostly failed. This "business" sounds terrible. They definitely need cloud services since they obviously don't give a crap about IT and will only upgrade and fix systems when they have no choice.
Hahaha lol yes. It was a bit if a disaster. But I think we are finally moving forward. And actually it is all forced. The software vendor for the CRM has started EOL on the Hosted CRM deployment. He has alot of bad taste in his mouth for everyone in our field. But we have been able to maintain a good line of trust and communication.
Before I forget...
The CRM solution uses Microsoft access for database storage, And I know somewhere above @scottalanmiller mentioned something about there likely being encryption with the database software. But there is zero encryption whatsoever. I told them we needed to vacate the solution asap. His business insurance carrier agreed! lol

RE: Cloud Provider...what to use
@Breffni-Potter said in Cloud Provider...what to use:
I've got a hosted Unifi controller but I would never run it on Windows. You spend half the time trying to force Unifi controller to run as a service, behave and various other things. Use this as a chance to learn Linux, you'll save a fortune in hosted services for things like this down the line and gain a good skill set.
I have a unifi controller setup on an Ubuntu box. The setup was not difficult, and it just works. I migrated it away from a windows box. Like SAM said it will cost you alot less on Linux.
Now for hosting I have been using profitbricks. I have really enjoyed the support they offer.
Their billing model is based on (cpu\hr + win liscense\hr) x Ram (qty\hr) x storage (30days)
It is very easy to work with. Takes less than 2 mins to create a new server.
All storage is raid 10 and they have multiple datacenter here in the US, as well as in Germany.
Just my thoughts

RE: Random Thread - Anything Goes
Cats must be evil!
You get home,
Your cat wants you to think of them first.
So they puke on the floor in a room. When you feel it you quick step to get away from it and then find they have another surprise waiting for you with your other foot.
You turn on the lights to find, they had set up a gauntlet for your arrival. Your fate was already sealed. Lol
Then while washing your feet in the tub, you almost became part of @scottalanmiller next fail army post!

RE: Thoughts on the BBB! Good ~ Bad
@MattSpeller said in Thoughts on the BBB! Good ~ Bad:
BBB is pay to play but I've heard they will negotiate disputes a bit.
Essentially, it's a little bit of extortion - "oh I see your BBB ratings / reviews are poor, would you like to pay us to fix that?"
Lol I love where this has gone. I'm chuckling here.
Anyways. When I spoke with them They had sad when it comes to disputes they will work to be the mediator of the parties involved. They look to resolve the issue as best as possible.
Also they said they provide assistance on Bad debt collection (Invoices greater than 45days late, and in excess of $200.) At no charge, and all received funds from the collection are the business owners.
I under stand pay to play. I wouldn't mind if I had positive, and negative feedback posted about me.
As I said it is how you handle the issue afterwards.
I had a vendor that I purchased a 4bay 4tb synology rack NAS from(AND paid more because it had disks) When I got it they had sent me a diskless system. They refused to resolve the issue saying that the unit doesnt had HDDs installed, and they would sell me more of them. I told them if I had made that mistake I would have sent the drives and ate it. In the end I shoved it back in their face and put the big FU in their future (As the song goes!)
I can understand mistakes, They happen. But they were wrong in their description. And wrong for not honoring what they marketed!
I will never buy from them again!
