I've decided to give IPhones a try, he coming Weeks (probably next pay day) I'll be going to get that - I want to see what the hype is about with those devices. Everyone Rants and raves about them , so Guess it's time to see.

you're jumping the gun... you should wait until the announcement of the next iphone in a few weeks... then the older models will be discounted.

there's a new one coming out?

my step-daughter has her Iphone 8 and she loves it. I have played around on it only a few times but cannot stand it. The one thing I absolutely enjoy about it is the keyboard. I have 80% less typo's than any other phone I have been on (mostly Galaxy S's).

The iphone 8 seemed slower when moving around than my Galaxy S6. That I don't understand..

Interesting. This is exactly how I felt about Android devices. Granted I haven't had once since the Google Nexus 6P or a Galaxy S5 (man what a piece of shit!!!). The Nexus was fine for my day to day use.. I don't feel that the iPhone 6 or 7 I have been using more recently was better or worse than the Nexus.... That said, I had to borrow an iPhone 6 a few months ago while my iphone 7 was being repaired.. and DAMN - it's super slow compared to the iphone 7.

Also - phones get bogged down by having tons of shit installed... so you mentioned it was your daughter's device... how many apps were installed? how many were running when you were using it?

Man, I loved my GS5, although I think our version here in Canada had a better CPU and processing stack than the US market one (G900W here). Mind you I was running Cyanomod and then LineageOS so none of that touchwiz garbage

    • Have computers gotten boring, or is it just me?

So, all kidding aside (about me becoming the boring thing) is there something that I'm overlooking or missing out on or have computers and OSs in general gotten really boring over the last few years? I used to recall getting interested in new features, a new distribution or a DE's latest release not so many years ago. Now it seems that things are more or less the same across the board... a boring game of IT theme and variation. Anyone else seeing the same thing(s) out there?

@WrCombs for $200 that's pretty cheap, I've never heard of the brand before, but brand recognition isn't all that important

      $200 is cheap ???"???

$200 for an unlocked phone? Hell yes that's cheap. I've seen BLU available at staples here, don't know of anyone who's tried one.

    • RE: Domain Planning: Network shares or ,..

Does NC allow exposure of their "file shares" as smb? If you have users that can't / don't want to use a browser-based access they can always mount it in windows explorer via webdav. Alfresco allows (allowed?) access via both, but the last time I played with it the performance was meh, which I attributed to it being built on java...

    • RE: zip and . rar files?

The advantage that I remember rar having was that it could split and then recombine an archive at the appropriate size for floppy disks. Seems foolish now but in the era of dial-up and 1.44 MB 3.5" diskettes it was a killer feature that winzip (also a paid software once upon a time, not always built into windoze) didn't have.

@IRJ said in zip and . rar files?:

@nadnerB said in zip and . rar files?:

7zip is multi-threaded. Sooooooo much faster to compress/decompress than standard zip files in Windows.

As already said above, WinRAR (.rar files) is paid software. 7zip is FOSS.

      and it's cross platform

And it'll right-click > extract just about anything, including exe 🙂 Makes extracting Dell iDRAC firmware blobs sooo much easier

Managed to kill the screen on my Galaxy S5 over the weekend. Since it's a work line and I've been using my own HW up until now they're covering a new Pixel 3a.... I've got an iPhone 7 on loan for the time being and it's just reinforcing my dislike of apple

Had deployed SW on-premise in my previous employment, I do not know how it will fare out after reading the news earlier. It has been rock solid even when others had an issue logging in when a problem struck...it seemed that my installation was not affected then.

I've tried and really liked osTicket but I am now testing GLPI. I was looking into a ticketing system with inventory and the features which tied the ticket to a person and/or hardware and keep its history (like SW). GLPI with FusionInventory seemed to be just that.

Let me know if you need any help, I've been dealing with the inventory side of that combo for going on 3 years now. Going to be getting more into the data-center / server room management side of it with the management and financials stuff next week.

Microsoft cuts Office 2019 one-time licenses through Home Use Program

Microsoft's march through subscription land continues apace.
Another one bites the dust. Microsoft has been shifting much of its software to a subscription model, and the latest Office 2019 news heralds another change on that front. The suite of Microsoft programs had been available for purchase as one-off perpetual licenses through the company’s Home Use Program. HUP lets select businesses offer employees discounted rates on the software from their workplaces to use at home. Both Office Professional Plus 2019 and Office Home and Business 2019 have been removed as options for one-off licenses under the program. Instead, HUP will give a 30% discount on annual subscriptions to Office software. Office 365 Personal will run HUP members $48.99 a year, and Office 365 Home will cost them $69.99 annually. The feature sets of the two subscriptions are the same, including premium versions of Microsoft programs, 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage, and OneDrive ransomware detection. The Home version supports up to six people, and Personal is for an individual.

This is going to drive a lot of people away from MS Office.

Not at all. The actual % of people that use this is low. Across the few clients I had that offered this I know of 3 users that made use of the benefit.

When I worked at AT&T, this was a benefit available. I know of only a handfull of people in a 500+ person office that made use of this benefit.

HUP was pretty popular here, not huge but more common than what's being mentioned here. Same for other places I've worked.

For something like a phone, Mexico and Panama are generally the best options for Americans due to their large supply chains that are generally disassociated from our own. Canadian supply chains tend to be "filtered" out of American ones - Canadians get just "less" than we get in the US, at higher prices.

Don't I know it.... but I didn't have to re-mortgage the house to cover the hospital bills when the kids were born. Advantage to where I live is that I can go to the states to get gas for the car. Typically about $0.30/L cheaper in Maine than here in town.
