Right on the verge of impossible to get in the US. Asus refuses to even provide Americans with a clear list of available products that they make!

Really? They aren't super popular or well known north of the 49th parallel but I can usually find unlocked versions through staples, amazon or best buy....

Maybe an excuse for some cross-border shopping?

We can generally find them, yes, but it takes a lot of effort and knowing what you are getting is extremely hard. The US is an odd market in that we get tons of things that no one else gets, but tons of things that are widely available elsewhere is effectively impossible to get in the US. Not totally impossible, just absurdly difficult and obscure.

Yeah, like a standard transmission in a Mazda3.... I got worried when reading reviews before the equipment specs were revealed, you guys can only get the stick in the top of the line version, here in the great white north it's available across the board. </thread hijack>

https://www.jitbit.com/ is what we're rolling out for both our internal and external clients.... Haven't been too involved but it seems pretty flexible and IIRC you get access to the source with the on prem enterprise version.

Google has knocked $400 off the Pixel 3 here in Canada if you're buying direct from them, otherwise the Asus Zenfone line is generally good bang for the buck. I've typically bought unlocked and go with Koodo's byod plans for myself and the SO.

Even with that change it still timed out. I allocated 1024 memory to the php memory_limit as well.

damn... maybe try running the query (or an equivalent) via cli just to validate that it's not a problem with the underlying client-server connection? Do the docs make any mention of tweaking the php timeouts?

Plant-based diet can fight climate change - UN

Switching to a plant-based diet can help fight climate change, UN experts have said.
A major report on land use and climate change says the West's high consumption of meat and dairy produce is fuelling global warming.
But scientists and officials stopped short of explicitly calling on everyone to become vegan or vegetarian.
They said that more people could be fed using less land if individuals cut down on eating meat.
The document, prepared by 107 scientists for the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says that if land is used more effectively, it can store more of the carbon emitted by humans.

Interesting - this is the second time I've seen/heard something like this. I have a friend who became a vegetarian only because of this reasoning - not that he doesn't believe in eating meat.. but because of the environmental impact of raising meat for consumption.

It is all about the cow farts

IIRC this has some interesting info on the amount of food consumed vs edible protein produced

Oh, I know the reality of this. Cow farts are more interesting though.

But does disabling USB differentiate between input devices over storage?

IIRC you can disable USB mass storage and leave it available for input at the OS level. If you want to disable it completely that would be a BIOS setting... or simply break the physical ports :smiling_face_with_horns:

My gut says that GPO is going to be the preferred option for a domain. In non-domain you'd probably have to go the 3rd party / registry route. There might be some RMM / endpoint control / security products that have this baked in but I'm not aware of anything right off the top of my head.

I looked at this when win10 first was rolling out maybe 2-3 years ago. I never got straight up answer's from Dell's PM's or sales people (What a surprise) and was NEVER able to talk to an engineer about it (again, NEVER talk to or trust sales people). We abandoned and just do our own image in house. wasn't worth the waste of time!

This was my feeling after looking through the docs, but we did a deployment of ~50 machines last year where we had them shipped to our main office, prepped them and then had them shipped to the branches.... I guess we got reamed on the shipping to the branch offices so I've been advised that the goal this time around is to have the hw shipped direct from Dell to site with everything more or less ready to deploy.

I'm sorry for 50? I just cannot imagine the cost savings is there...

shrug I don't get to see the bills....

Does anyone here have experience with providing an image to Dell for fleet deployment? We had a call the other week about it with one of their PMs and I got some documentation today.

If I understand their docs correctly the process is entirely off-line in the factory, which to me means that no windows updates are going to be applied and I'll have to figure out a plan B for O365 installation as (I think) it queries M$ at install time to validate that the cached install files are still good before running the install from the MDT repository.

I'm waiting on word back from the PM, but basically my questions are:
1- Does anyone know of a way that I can just supply Dell with a wim from MDT (or other image format) that they can apply to the machines being ordered and deployed?

2- If so, what is it called in dell-speak? Every vendor seems to have their own lingo / language / marketing term for simple things and I never got that particular decoder ring in my cereal..

If using Ubuntu, you should use 18.04 LTS. Nearly everything in Ubuntu is tested LTS.
I was surprised how much shit isnt supported / test on 19.04 vs 18.0

I feel the opposite (and was told the opposite by Canonical.) All their testing and support goes to the current, not the LTS, releases. Yes, third parties oddly tend to test with outdated stuff more, but it's not the approach that Ubuntu themselves recommend. And while it may get more testing, the current gets more updates, which especially in stuff like this I think outweighs testing.

I hear where you're coming from and see the logic for systems that are only using stuff from canonical's own repos, but my experience has been that all of the 3rd party stuff seems (seemed? it's been a while since I've done much with 3rd party apps) to be tested and optimized for the LTS stream.

I though the ATI/AMD GPUs had decent open source drivers?

Might the case in general, but in my specific case the manual control / switching has been depreciated in the closed source and was never cleanly implemented in the opensource ones that I've seen. But to be perfectly honest I haven't put a whole lot of time into seeing if I can get it to work. The guides I've skimmed all seem to reference scripts and rebooting the x server... I'm not using that machine for anything that needs that level of tweaking so it's nothing more than an example of discontinued hardware support....
