@NashBrydges - Silly question but is the handset plugged into the correct jack on the back of the phone? I can't remember if the handset and headset ports are similar on the T57W.

      Yeah, the connections are good.

@scottalanmiller Yes I have, and given the phone is a Yealink, I think that capability exists however this is not my ideal workaround. I'd like to fix the actual problem without having to go VPN. But if there is no fix that I can find, I may not have any other choice.

I shoudl clarify that I don't want a site to site VPN. The only acceptable VPN solution would be the device VPN.

@JaredBusch Yeah, I'm relatively new with this client and trying to fix their most critical problems first. Agree, that needs to be upgraded.

@JaredBusch Are you suggesting that an upgrade could fix this issue?

I port forwarded 10000-20000 to the FreePBX and still no joy.

@JaredBusch Yeah that was the first thing I tried but didn't help. I am going to port forward the RTP ports on the FreePBX network and give that another try.

I'm sure that once I hear how to fix this I will probably have a "doh" moment but for now, I have an issue I can't seem to be able to fix. Here is the setup.

      FreePBX Location:

      • Unifi network with all devices running latest firmware
      • Unifi controller v6.0.22
      • FreePBX v14.0.13.40 setup and running onsite with 55 extensions.
      • Everything is working as expected here with no issues.
      • Fixed public IP
      • Local network 192.168.0.0/24 - flat network - no VLAN for voip

      Remote Network:

      • Unifi network with all devices running latest firmware
      • Unifi controller v6.0.22
      • 1 single phone to be connected back to the main office FreePBX (no local PBX)
      • Fixed public IP
      • Local network 192.168.100.0/24 - flat network - no VLAN for voip

I've disabled SIP CONNTRACK MODULE for both networks.
I've port forwarded 5060 to the FreePBX server limiting access to the remote public IP
I've added the remote IP to the "networks" tab on FreePBX
Asterisk info shows the remote extension is registered however "UNREACHABLE" (see screenshot)
I've checked FreePBX and the IP address is not banned/blocked.

I can make a call from the remote extension and it rings at its destination however once I answer, there is no sound from either phones. This is true whether I'm dialing a direct extension or calling a landline or cell phone. It rings but no audio so I suspect some firewall setting may have been missed.
The issue appears to be RTP related.

Wondering if anyone can help me figure out what I've missed.

    • RE: Unifi Point to Point

UBNT has also recently released a Unifi based option. Haven't tried those though.

      https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi-network-routing-switching/products/unifi-building-to-building-bridge

I've also use the Cambium PTP550 on a few installs and they have been rock solid. Less than 7ms latency. Clients consistently get their max 500Mbps speeds over the PtP and price was really competitive. My largest deployment using the Cambium is for a shopping mall which handles all guest wifi as well as the main office and security services onsite. Max concurrent users (pre-pandemic) was ~500 to 1,000 on busy days and no problems handling load.

    • RE: NAS for Plex use... Again

I used to be in the same boat with a ton of movies for about 23TB but the NAS couldn't handle more than a single stream running Plex so I kept the NAS as just storage and setup the Plex server on an actual server. Then the NAS' only task was file sharing which it did well. I've now moved the entire Plex onto a Dell R520 LFF and leverage VMs as storage and Plex server at a colo. I stream from Rokus at my house that are connected to the Plex server at the colo. Stream full uncompressed 4k without any hiccups.

I thought it was just me. I've had the exact same issue with the "wrong password" entry in the log when I know this not to be true. If I reload the console it reconnects. Voip.ms told me to connect to a different server but that just feels like they're avoiding having to solve the issue. It happens every few days.

    • VM Windows 10 Pro Licensing On Hyper-V

I met with a prospective client today over video chat (wanted to reduce physical exposure for everyone until we're in a place where onsite visit is necessary) and she walked me through her current setup and what she'd like to do. One thing stood out for me as potentially problematic so wanted to check here to see if someone could point me in the right direction.

Her current IT admin (still employed there...for now) has setup a Windows 2016 server with Hyper-V role. He's the used Disk2VHD to create a disk image of each of their business' 8 PCs and loaded them up on the Windows server to run as virtual desktop. He then uninstalled all of the business software from each of their desktops so they are now essentially running their entire business via those virtual Win10 machines. Each physical desktop is now essentially a client for accessing the users' virtual PCs. Nothing is running on their physical PCs except Windows 10 Pro. All their software is running on their virtual desktops.

I'm pretty sure that's problematic in that they are in breach of MS licensing terms (I think). There are no CALs. They simply use the Remote Desktop client on their physical desktops to access their virtual PCs and it is a 1:1 setup with everyone having their own virtual Win10 PC. There is no AD of any kind.

If I understand the licensing correctly, in this setup, they would require Windows Software Assurance, Windows VDA subscription, or Windows E3/E5 licenses, do I have that right? They would also require CALs for the appropriate # of users, correct?

    • Microsoft Search in Bing and Office 365 ProPlus

Got this email from MS today. Oh goody! MS is publicly announcing it is getting into the PUP/malware business 😉

Getting flashbacks of Netscape v. Microsoft.

Starting with Version 2020 of Office 365 ProPlus, an extension for Microsoft Search in Bing will be installed that makes Bing the default search engine for the Google Chrome web browser. This extension will be installed with new installations of Office 365 ProPlus or when existing installations of Office 365 ProPlus are updated. If Bing is already the default search engine, the extension doesn't get installed.
