WinSCP seems good the times I have used it. Use a custom port though for more security

I use the lockdown script and mysql tuner. I am sure there are many other things I need to do but have not had time to investigate yet. I use mariadb.

RE: bitwarden - Open Source Password Management Tool
That looks nice. I use Dashlane and I love the features it has. I will have to test Bitwarden to see how it compares though. Good find

RE: Korora 26 is Here!
oh and our clan was called STD just for that stupid joke that people thought was funny.

RE: Korora 26 is Here!
@scottalanmiller Back in the beginning of my gaming days I played Tribes. Our group was a big lan group in the basement of this guy who was a gyno. Most of the members took STD names for their characters. Not me but most did. Your post made me remember that.

RE: Notorious Short-seller labels Ubiquiti Networks $UBNT as FRAUD
@coliver yeah she changed it recently. Previous one was better though it was in a mirror so you could see her phone and her taking a selfie lol

RE: Notorious Short-seller labels Ubiquiti Networks $UBNT as FRAUD
@irj Oh I got one of these too I get emails from.
Yeah they are the only ones with a profile picture like that

RE: Notorious Short-seller labels Ubiquiti Networks $UBNT as FRAUD
@jaredbusch So the guy writing abut all this is really exaggerating the effect. This does not seem to be that important. Anyone researching and buying Ubiquity products will be aware of their limitations anyway. everything has some sort of limitations. I mean if you cant event notice it on a 50/50 line then how big a deal is this really?

RE: Forum Posting Etiquette
Good points. It just depends on what your motivation is I guess. If you do not want anyone to read it then sure write a huge wall of text but if you want to have a conversation about something then break it up. That is how I write on my website for tech beginners, www.aindien.com/blog, because if you don't then those beginners will leave quickly.
Sometimes I catch myself writing too much at once but I "try" to make a paragraph every 3-4 lines. It makes it easier to read and for people to respond to. If I need advice on something then obviously I should make it easy for people to respond. It just makes sense.
It is important to remember that whatever community you participate to be friendly. Here, we are all generally friends so having a conversation is a good thing and writing well helps that process. Good video thanks!

RE: PBX Question
@dashrender Yeah I agree with that. I think I will offer to do it for free this time and explain to him its a learning opportunity for me.
-
RE: PBX Question
@eddiejennings I would like the learning opportunity and doing it for a buddy on a real small scale seems the best time to do that.

RE: PBX Question
@dashrender Just got home. Ok thanks Dashrender. So at least not horrible and sounds doable after a week or 3

PBX Question
Context:
I have a good buddy that owns a small business and he wants me to redo his phone system with voip. He wants 3 phones so its a small endeavor. He then told me he wanted me to do it because he had been reading up on other people doing PBX solutions. I told him I had never done this before and he would be better off getting someone with more experience in this. He insists that i do it because I have already done a lot of general work for him including his computer system and audio/video stuff. He has always paid well so I guess I can't complain but I don't even know how involved this is going to be. I assume a hosted solution like with Vultr but I don't know for sure if that is accurate or not.
Questions:
Is this something I can figure out and do in a month's time?
What all do I need to consider?
How do I charge for this now?
How does the monthly fees for him work in the future after he has been set up?
Will there likely be support to do eventually when and if things break?
Anything else I need to know from those experienced with this? -
RE: Where Does University Need to Focus for IT Students
@scottalanmiller said in Where Does University Need to Focus for IT Students:
Remember that in the business world, 85% of new businesses fail in the first five years. Over 50% in the first year - which means that they started a business without thinking through how to even get it to the point of maybe starting. The failure rate of normal business thinking is very high. IT is a business endeavour. IT has to do business, but in a vastly more technical way, without the benefit of getting to be openly honest about the challenges of IT nor that they are actually a business function. IT has one of the hardest jobs out there, in all seriousness it's an intense field. That the failure rates are astronomic is to be expected.
Guess I need to go watch your entering IT video. Just realized I had missed it. I want to get to the point where I make business decisions so I need to figure out the best path for that.

RE: Where Does University Need to Focus for IT Students
@scottalanmiller So IT is making business decisions and solving problems for users on a logical level and
bench is just working with the hardware? -
RE: Where Does University Need to Focus for IT Students
@scottalanmiller Ok interesting video. I guess I did not realize that the average bench and It person were so bad. I do have a story about that though which confirms what you said. A few years ago I went to an Altex store and asked their management person what I would need to do to use SAS drives just because I wanted to learn the technology of them and building a good server. He had never heard of that term and said it did not exist as there was only regular and ssd drives. So I'm just proving your point. I would not, a good lawyer, make.
