The whole crux of my ask was - the desire to buy as few Windows Server CALs as possible.

This is unrelated to the question asked, though.

you know i have noticed you and dash really communicate differently. not good or bad, just different. then you both have trouble understanding the other. from the many threads i have read with you two, that is the common theme i have seen.

    • RE: Generating content ideas for topics, posts, articles

@ivan-palii I use OneNote several times a day and do it every day. Among other things, I keep a running list of things to write about based on things I encounter with my users. Excel tutorial, network question, c++ problem a professor had, basic Linux concepts for another professor to help her class. things like that.

When i encounter something I use OneNote app on phone and enter it in and refer to it and add a lot more to make a post. http://aindien.com/blog Its real basic material and its stuff that would bore you all to tears but I have found an audience for it.

    • RE: AVImark support has stated that running virtual servers can result in a 40-50% data loss or complete destruction of your server.

If Scott asked me to go look at a situation here in my local area on behalf of NTG, for that time I consider myself a representative and part of NTG during that time. So anything I say or recommend would be the same as if someone drove down here from NTG and assessed the situation. That's how I would look at it.

@networknerd You know, just an idea for those of us who all have blogs, maybe we should be linking to and promoting each other. We are all friends here and it would help every blog thats involved.

I have seen versions of those directed at me. Its a vendor trying to guilt trip you in a dumb way to schedule a meeting or just be memorable which will then hopefully get you to schedule a meeting or call.

    • How to Layer Your Security Needs

From reading here there are many opinions on how to do certain activities in IT. This topic will be about security and the different ways you protect your network. Physical security should also be a part of that so if anyone has recommendations then please chime in. Lets learn from each other. Everyone has had good points so there is certainly something to be learned from having a discussion about it. feel free to respond to all or certain points here.

We have the obligatory firewall and I put AV on every device that comes into the shop from Dell/HP. I setup the machines so I always have a local admin account I can always use if I need to. That is in my image from SmartDeploy and it evolves as I need it to. I record all machine info into OneNote that is organized by building along with the user and mac address if I know that info at the start. I constantly patch and update applications, Windows OS, and AV from this master list. I am a fanatic about updating. I use a combination of PDQ, Psexec, and Chocolatey to this for me. We have all server rooms and network closets locked. We also use security cameras for all of the buildings. That is a little of my environment.

Everyone uses firewalls but are there certain features you can't live without?
Any firewall features that used to be important but are no longer?
Is it helpful to learn how to host our own DNS( thinking Bind) instead of using something like OpenDns?
What kind of physical security do you employ?
Are there certain types of layering that do not work well together?
Any brands of firewalls or AV to avoid?
Lastly, how do you layer your security if its different than usual?

    • RE: Why Do Recruiters Never Get Involved in Forums Like This

@scottalanmiller Those are all good points. If I was a recruiter and cared about my job then I would want actual IT experience myself and follow a forum like this. Seeing what people contribute and their solutions would just be "gold" I would think when looking for someone.

    • RE: I have to change cloud drive service yet again

Do we know why his users are constantly moving files?
I'm of the mind to just never move files.
Open file, edit file, close the file. No problems.
Just don't move the file. Who doesn't understand that this would cause many problems?

    • Question about Raid Performance

I have never used a hardware card before. Just always used mdadm. I got an extra perc h310 card and wondered if I would get better performance using that instead of mdadm. The hardware is a Dell Precision 5810 with 32 gb memory and 2 ssd at 250gb each. What do you all think?

    • RE: Meeting software - how do you handle it?

This may not be exactly useful in this situation but I have Zoom installed for everyone. There have been times when users were sent a webex invite and they couldn't get it to work for some reason. They then just used Zoom and emailed the invite. The other person clicks the link and Zoom installs itself and the meeting is setup. It's pretty painless even for my people.

    • Looking for Career Advice

      Hey Everyone,
As I'm sure most of you have been through this, I'm quite frustrated at my current job. It is low pay and I have never had a pay increase in my 5 years here. Users always complain to me about how little they make and tell me but then I am always too embarrased to tell them I make less than they do. This is actually just common here as that is why most people leave.

I have done the job of 3 people here for the last 2 years. We have 3 campuses and used to have a person at all 3 places. It has been just me for a little over 2 years. They only just now hired a person for 1 of the other campuses. We are a small 2 year college. On average I clear out 1250 tickets every 6 months according to my stats on our support software. So they keep me busy. I currently drive around to all 3 cities to do this and I pay my own gas. We are 100% Windows based for the users, with Win10 as our OS.

Other than the pay the most frustrating part and the tipping point to me is that I am never allowed to grow as an employee here. I have asked for access to several of our systems (SCCM was the last example) in order to learn new skills I can't replicate at home in my lab easily but always told no. I am asked to support 2 certain systems that I don't even have access to which i find insulting. Users are users, you all know them, they are mostly idiots who are very lazy except for a few.

So to sum it up, I don't feel appreciated. I have given my all here and always ask for extra responsibility and access to things in order to learn and grow. I am asked to train the new person and subsequent new hires because I know our environment so well.

I have a few skills. I feel like I am a good problem solver. I havent had a problem in my 5 years here that I could not figure out given a few days. I do as much with Powershell as I can. I could do a lot more if I had more access and higher credentials in our AD environment. When I first started here I was told to go to each pc and work on the problem and update them from that physical location. I quickly grew tired of that and learned how to use Powershell for remoting, update scripts that I automate now, and printer management. So I have become much more efficient. I have the A+, CTS, and Network + certs. I am about to take the SNCP storage exam and then start on Microsoft certifications. I want to do Linux exams but doing Microsoft first because that is our environment. I have basic to intermediate level Linux skills. I first started using Red Hat around the years 1999,2000. I'm a little fuzzy that far back now. However i think i still have my Red Hat cd roms somewhere in storage. I currently use Fedora and Suse, mostly Fedora though. My work desktop is a raid 0 machine with mdraid and kvm enabled where i run Fedora and a couple different Windows vm's. My laptop is just kvm with 1 Windows vm for when I am on a different campus. I operate 2 webservers personally and other things that I access from home usually. I can do basic hardening and don't have any issues working on the command line to do whatever I need to do on them. I run a few other things as well on the same cloud hardware to learn in the past such as Rocketchat, Mediawiki, and OSTicket. I can do basic level c++ and python stuff.

So with that little bit of context, when does the average IT person move on ?
      Am I overthinking things?
Should I just be happy to have a job?
What do you all do when you want to learn new things to be more valuable that you can't do at home?

    • RE: Why I Choose LibreOffice

@scottalanmiller I am sure that a large percentage of organizations that use MS office would get by peachy without it. It might just be a culture thing to expect MS office in a business because no one really evaluates things. I know there are always exceptions.
