@TAHIN said in Sophos or WebRoot Cloud Endpoint Advanced - Any Thoughts???:

I used Sophos EP from to 2011-2014. During that time there was only one big hiccup where a definition update flagged a Windows system file as a virus, which sent a virus popup to our 300 users. If your settings were set to quarantine, the procedure to fix it was VERY painful.

Pretty much every AV solution has had this happen at least once. having a simple fix for people is the biggest deal. Sophos and Avast both have given simple fixes. Norton/Symantec I believe required a system restore for theirs

    • Logmein Custom Pin Entry form

Anyone tried using this? In IIS the errors don't seem to work, the url shows the response from logmein but the document doesn't write the text. If it works it downloads the file properly however.

Well OpenDNS specificly caches DNSs longer than most so it likely would fix all issues as even if Dyn's servers were down longer than the entries TTL OpenDNS would still use it.

I'm not sure why people use VLANS thinking it's QOS heck most of the time VoIP doesn't need QoS on the LAN until you get big anyhow..

We use VLANs for security and logical separation but if you have no ACLs then there's no security.

We use VLANs for the phones most for sanity.. We don't want to see 23,000 phone in our dang DHCP server nor pay for windows device cals for non-domain users with phones. DHCP is handled by routers for phones. Secondly, Phones are setup by a TFTP server which is handed out by DHCP. Doing this on the main network will mess with PXE boot for clients.

Squid can filter HTTPS if you configure it too.. intercepting HTTPS imo is a bad Idea

use a DNS filter like Nxfilter http://www.nxfilter.org/p2/?page_id=16

@stacksofplates said in Time to gut the network - thoughts?:

Ok I'm done. I'm missing time with my family.

My point was, most of the people hiring consultants don't know what good or bad advice is. Look at SW. It's a perfect example.

I was saying statements like this:

Should have walked them out the door the moment that you found out that they didn't know even the basic underpinnings of networking or phones. What value did they bring if they aren't aware of how either work?

Are kind of ridiculous. If you yourself don't understand how they work, how would you decide they don't. Which is why people on SW are in the situations they are in.

Yeah this site is going down hill fast.. all it is is threads that turn into arguments anymore.

@travisdh1 said in Time to gut the network - thoughts?:

@travisdh1 That said, I don't know what the price difference actually is myself. For servers and backbone it might be worth the upgrade all around.

Refurbs aren't bad, but new NICs are around $250-300 and if you use SFP then it's even more.

We just use SFP+ switches in the server rack and SFP card, with SFP+ Cooper 10GB cables. Then you can just use fiber uplinks from the rack switches (we use 40GB QSFP+ uplinks) No point in doing Fiber to the server.

      oCkdbBE.png

I don't know OSHA law/rules, but there should be no need to check for over current in the black part, it's a 1 to 1 connection. Assuming you plug the 1 to 1 and it's plugged directly into a UPS port, not a power strip like this picture.

1:1 does not necessarily imply no over current protection is needed.

At this point the assumption would be that the UPS you're plugging into would handle that.

No it is not protecting the cable you plug into it, it may not be the same gauage for the amprage rating of the UPS protection. You also can't assume that. A lot of lower end UPSes do not have circuit breakers.

Out of curiosity, what is the switch du jour these days? Was a firm decision ever made?

That would depend on your needs.

@scottalanmiller said in Tax question / free hardware:

You are not familiar with use taxes? That's what you owe when you didn't pay sales tax on something.

"The use tax imposes a compensating tax equal in amount to the sales tax that would have been imposed on the sale of the property, if the sale had occurred within the state's taxing jurisdiction."

I thought use tax was imposed according to the state in which the product is being consumed. There's no sales tax in Montana, and therefore no use tax either. There is a small clause for sales and use tax, but that is limited to campgrounds/tourist stuff (go us lol).

Well, if you have no sales or use tax, then you probably don't have anything at all to worry about. What other kind of tax would you be subject to for accepting goods? Computers/servers/printers, and other typical IT related things aren't subject to property tax. I can't think of anything else you'd have to worry about.

I suppose someone could try to claim capital gains taxes? meh?

Actually they are subject to property tax as well as depreciation credits. With business all physical assets are taxable.

I wonder if something of this sort would be allowed.... It's not a power strip. just power cords that are about a foot long to allow connection to the adapters.

      8zW2l.jpg

No over current protection. Also this type device in a commerical setting falls under extension cord restrictions, which OSHA only allows temporary use of. Now if they are UL Listed for being plugged into a power strip in that manner it would be allowed.. (hence how C13 extensions are allowed) but otherwise they would have to be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
