For just three? I might actually just suggest something more like 8x8 - Do you really need a full PBX for just three phone?

Yes, I do recognize that 8x8 costs more per user then a PBX hosted on say Vultr - ...

Not for 3 people it doesn’t. Unless you are set and forgetting it.

      Exactly.

Last I heard - NTG did this at $12+/month per user, but at that few, it could be a lot more than that.

If your friend can manage it all themselves, they could get away with the PBX functions inside VOIP.ms - they've brodened their PBX offerings several times over the past year. i.e. expanded it's functionality.

If those are the only people with access - why not just put it on that LAN?

Other equipment it talks to on another network; and we do not have access to that other equipment.

Where is that network? how does the web server get to that network now?

Ability to have a large deployment with security built in already and not lose that.

Do you know if it is FIPS 140-2 certified?

Almost certainly not. That is a "pay the government for favours" cert that only big vendors can do. No small project can think about doing stuff like that because there's no way to make money from having done it and it doesn't just cost the developers an arm and a leg, but it directly takes away funding and development time from their actual users. So the developers don't wait to lose the money, and the real world customers don't want them focusing on something that's only for political reasons.

While I don't know 100% that either is certified, I'm certain that they are not and have no interest. It just doesn't make sense financially or ideologically.

Gave up. Saving to Server 2019 instead.

Now that is just odd. If you can set it to save to the Server 2019 path, it should also work for Server 2021 path.

Maybe create a new path on Server 2012 using the same steps you used on Server 2019?

While I think Scott's a bit overblown with the whole Windows Server and SQL server to be "serious" I see where he's coming from.
For example sticking with Windows 10 for example is likely fine because I'm assuming it's being run on and from a single machine connected to the gate system, not a remote server, etc...

It's a licensing requirement if you want security and reliable multi-user access. Otherwise you have to use the shared-file system of a JetDB that is completely exposed to things like ransomware. And that is highly flaky once you have more than about five users.

This really seems like a single computer setup - so while what you mention could be good, might be overkill for this setup.

It is a Raspberry Pi setup, IMO. I think @JasGot is right on that.

I think he is off on the "wishing he had 5 hours" thing though.

I don't know enough about controlling Pi pins to handle this. I think that would be better than the serial interface for the relay control. But it will also require then new wiring which is physical.

The barcode readers should be a standard listen for input handler.

The database design should be pretty straightforward.

The user interface does not sound like it needs to be complex, but like anything, you need to make it comfortably usable, or users will not use.

Finally, security of the application, it's users, data, etc will have to be designed.

Going to the easily overlooked possibility, is there enough free-space on the SMB share for the bigger jobs?

Yes. The file on the USB was about 277MB. 100's of GB available on share.

@jasgot it’s less about the physical size of the monitors and more the resolution of the monitor.

Our Surface Pro 6 drives a 27” 1920x1080 display no problems.

If you need/want 4K, the specs should tell you if they are supported.

What more were you looking for?

      Air or Pro?

It depends. If you need the extra 100 nits of brightness, touchbar, and you know you need the fan from extended compute then get the pro. Otherwise save the couple hundred and get the air.

You can still get the 8 core cpu and 8 core gpu in the air. It's pretty much the same minus the stuff mentioned above. The battery is also a tiny bit smaller and I think the microphone is less "studio quality".

Yeah, watch out for the 7 core Air. Cheaper, but just splurge.

Also the Air is lighter. For a student on the go, likely will be appreciated.

OD has settings that you can enable to only sync things on demand. They may even be default anymore, been a year+ since I dealt with it.

I believe it is now. It wasn't in my local folder until I manually Sync'd it. Pretty cool feature. Nothing syncs until you tell it to.

I've had better luck finding jobs with ZipRecruiter. It's supposed to be easier for someone looking to hire as well. Don't know about "the other side" tho.

I tried this one last time I was looking for a part time person. it was a shit show like the rest.

      And really expensive.

      Result, not worth the cost.

I'll pay more for quality.. It was not.

      This talks about

gpmc.msc is the correct tool to use. (gpedit.msc won't display the security/services items)

I'm building GPOs on the server so I have to use gpmc, gpedit will not build gpos.

That article is good, I've been heading down each rabbit hole it reveals, It may be leading me to the solution.

Thank you for the link. I'll report back with the actual link that worked if I am successful.

After much research and testing. I chose: gSyncit v5 https://www.fieldstonsoftware.com/software/gsyncit5

So far I am happy with it. It certainly resolved the sync issues I started having with Companionlink that they could not sort out.
It was the only reason I went looking for another option.

It's too bad they couldn't sort it out, I really liked the Calendar widget in their Android DejaOffice product much better than the native calendar widget.

So, our phones and PCs with any combination of Google Calendar (we don't use gmail) and MS Outlook are all in sync now (once again!)

I've found overlapping issues with my posted rules...

I can't dial any area code that starts with 2 or 3, as that will pull the call to an extension (i.e. 1-213 goes to ext 1213)

This is a typical scenario to be aware of and design for. Nothing more than attention to detail.

Yeah - and I wonder if that's one of the leading reasons for adding a 9 for dialing out?

      no.

@scottalanmiller said in Does this IP mean anything to anyone? 192.168.99.184:

That's a non-routable number. It's part of the private 192.168.0.0/16 range that anyone can use, but can't go out to the Internet.

I know. And that's really the basis for why I am asking. "Is it a default IP used (for some vendors) when there is no known destination?"

      https://router-network.com/ip/192-168-99-184
      https://forums.grandstream.com/t/issue-setting-up-new-skyetel-trunk-to-ucm-pbx/35731

And here's a packet capture showing this IP as the destination for the RTP traffic (from Skyetel)

      d9c756e8-ab20-4727-80dd-7792ccef5cea-image.png

We don't use it when there is no destination, we use it to communicate with our load balances and other routing gizmos. The stuff in "line=sr-...." gibberish is the actual data that we care about, not the IP.

Its basically a way for us to securely communicate across multiple routers that are unaware of each other's existence on a call-by-call basis.
